292 Engine Condition Question

Starting to disassemble 1965, 292 inline 6 cylinder engine. Purchased engine used. Seller said the engine was from a low mileage ambulance. So far, have the cylinder head off and looking at cylinder walls. The cylinder walls show no signs of ridge wear. Have not looked at all the cylinder walls yet.

Question is do these engines typically have a wear ridge at the top of cylinders where rings stop?

Still evaluating engine, and need to make decision on, to keep as whole engine or save for parts. Original plan was for it to be a parts engine, however, looks to be in good condition so far.

Don't look to bad to me...hot tank and good cylinder wall honing an you should be good to go. Long as the block has no cracks or major issues you will be fine.

If it doesn't have a ridge I'd guess it is pretty low miles. Do you need 292-specific parts like the crank/block/rods, etc? If not, I'd just pick up a dirt cheap 194/230/250 for parts.* 292's aren't all that common, and are by far the most desirable of the sixes.

*Also, if your engine needs those parts, I'd probably use it as the parts/spares engine and run this one. No sense in taking apart a good one to cobble a blown one back together IMO.

I'd personally freshen it up and put it back in something.

Why did you take it apart? 292's are pretty bullet proof. Find something to put that engine in and quit messing it up!!!

i would be more concerned with the crank i would plasti-gauge it and go from there. they are good strong engines they used them in a-lot of commercial trucks my dads friend has one in a dump truck!
