does anyone know what that big spring is for that is hanging down on the inside drivers side firewall to the left of the steering column? Mine is just hanging there not hooked to anything???

If it is a manual trans that would be the clutch pedal return spring. If it is an auto it might be the brake pedal return spring. If it has been converted from manual to auto trans you probably don't need it.

I've heard of muffler bearings and piston return springs but never the muffler return spring!

could it possibly be a old hood spring , might have poped of at some time and the hinge replaced some people are to lazy to fish out old stuff

It doesn't look quite heavy enough for a clutch pedal spring. I'm thinking brake pedal.... I will have to check mine.

I assumed because I have the low hump trans like the automatics came with it was born with an auto. I know I read somewhere here VIN ID CHART. I need to get the vin and check it out now that I'm curious

That's where my brake pedal return spring is attached, but my spring appears to be much stouter than the one in your pic.

Maybe that's what a previous owner used to replace the original return spring? A 3spd manual would have the low hump. Ok,that's it,gotta go.That's enough drama for me

Brake return spring is blue, but doesn't go to the firewall. Maybe someone connected it there instead of the brake box assembly? Hard to say for sure, but the spring actually looks too light to be the brake return spring. And I think that'd certainly rule it out as the clutch spring if that's the case.
