Original 40 Series, or Delta Flows?
I'm going to be doing the exhaust on my Caddy 500 powered truck probably next weekend. I ordered original 2 chamber Flowmaster 40 series 3" center in, center out mufflers a week ago but when I got them, they turned out to be all the above, EXCEPT that they are the Delta Flow mufflers instead. They said they can't get non-Delta Flows anymore, so shipped the D.F.'s instead. My question is: Does anyone have first hand experience with the difference between original 40 series and Delta Flow 40 series? I want the loudest exhaust but if there is only a marginal difference between the two, then I may forego the hassle of shipping them back and just use D.F.'s. It will NEVER be too laud for me. Sound QUALITY is a measurable and tangible thing to me, but it can NEVER get too laud! My idea of "IDEAL" exhaust note is the bad-ass sound of my uncles sand rail running a 14:1 230cid alum. block Buick V-8 motor with open headers at about 6000 rpm! (and everywhere in between actually!!) That READS like a small motor, but if you didn't know better, just going off the sound of it you'd think it was a full race big block!
Ok, sorry for the tangential detour.....My combo is: '70 C/10 SWB Caddy 500cid/TH-400 with stock manifolds going into dual 3" pipes into mufflers directly under the cab floor boards OUTSIDE the frame rails exiting with tips centered right at the back edge of the door. |

the Delta flows are defenitly quieter than reg. 40 series. Did they charge same price? Usually Deltas are more pricey.
Differant strokes for differant folks I guess, the only way I like loud is if its also fast.& I dont like how a low compression engine sounds with loud exhaust. But hey as long as you like it, thats what matters.

I had a 79 T/A sleeper with a solid roller 455 on Nitrous. It had 3 inch pipes and 40 series non DF muff's. It was loud and had more of an open pipe sort of nascar sound to it. I really liked them. I now have 40 series DF's on my ZZ502 with 3 inch pipes.....it's not much quieter but the tone is depper and less trash can sounding....

DF's defenitly sound much better than the standard 40 series mufflers. I have a pair of 2.5" 40 series DF's on my truck and they sound pretty good. I was running them dumped infront of the rear axle with no turndowns or anything, and DAMN! They sounded really, really good. Not tinny like a standard flow...more of a deep roar.
However that deep roar had gotten me into a little trouble latley (loud and excessive ticket ), so i put some turndowns on them. It made the exhaust a little tinnier, and pretty quiet at part throttle, and at idle. But when i get on it it still sounds mean, just not really mean like before. I would reccomend the DF 40's to anyone

There is a harley shop in town so they are always ripping up and down main street.....i get on my truck a little bit and lay like a 1' black mark and get a ticket.....grrrr. For some reason cops seem to be soft on harleys and hard on old trucks

I got 40 df on my 93 full size 5 speed blazer. I had wanted the original also. I didnot realize they were df until they were on the truck.
I had my brother drive around the block in 1st and 2nd gear only. They sounded awesome - loud, deep and mean. You could hear the truck the whole time. Especially when he got the rpms up when he was the furthest distance from me. But i also have 18 inch tips, i believe that may enhance the sound a little. |

Not to jump in on someone's thread but how much quieter are the 50 DF than the 40 DF? I have the 2 chamber 40's right now and am thinking about the Delta's.
