Fleetside Tailgate Lettering finish?

Hey what is the way most are doing the "Chevrolet" lettering on the back of the fleetside tailgates. Paint or a Vinyl decal? What are the pros and cons of each?
Just curious, how were they done from the factory?
Thanks,

Re: Fleetside Tailgate Lettering finish?

The factory painted them on over the topcoat using an air gun and paint mask.
There are lots of different ways as you pointed out to redo them. Some people like to paint the letters first and mask for the top coat others just paint them on like the factory did (sort of). Vinyls work for a lot of people and are probably the best choice for an inexpensive, sharp letter. Even more so if you want a custom effect. There was a time for instance if you wanted chromed letters you chromed the tailgate then painted over everything but the letters. Now of course you can get chrome letters and other non-stock colors beyond black or white.

I've never been a fan of stickers...My first truck was going to get them on the tail gate and the painter said "Whoa!!!" "I'll paint the letters".

So, when the current and last truck (RAT) came home from the painter, I had these 3M /GM stickers in the stash. For fun, I put one on. Liked it
enough to put the rest of 'em on. I'll leave them on.
