My cab rust
So i have said that my cab has some rust heres the pictures. I dont know if i should just get a new cab from the south or bring it to a auto body/resto shop to replace the rust with fresh metal. Any thoughts?

Re: My cab rust
New cab - but not from the South - you can get rust in the south east and near a coast. Try the southwest. Cabs are about $250 out here in the junkyards. Or, just get a whole truck shipped to you - keep what you want and sell the rest, or just start with a better truck. Check CL for New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada - but make sure you stay away from the mountain areas where it snows - they use salt there too.

Re: My cab rust
It's not that bad. Mine took about 25 hours in all mostly working by myself. That's only 2 full days on a weekend and a few hours here and there after work.

Re: My cab rust
Unless your frame, box, suspension, etc., are all rust free, I think you will find it a lot easier to just get another truck. My guess is under $1500 shipped to you from the southwest, and you can salvage parts off your current truck to offset the cost. The trans and engine from the unused truck should get a few hundred dollars, plus all of the do dads on the truck. Then sell the rusty carcass to the junkyard for $200-$300.
Plus, you don't have to mess with the VIN swap - might even be illegal in your state. |

Re: My cab rust
I did a cab swap on my 83, and the biggest problem was the wiring. The cab I used was an 84, and so was the harness. I wanted to keep the 83 dash setup, so I sectioned it out and had to do a little modification of the harness to make it work. Other than that, it was just body work. It's really not as difficult as it looks. While you're under there, replace your body mount bushings. It will make a world of difference, and your body lines will be perfect when you're done.

Re: My cab rust
Shipping from California to the east coast a vs bus was $850 calling around. Make a vacation out of getting a rust free truck.

Re: My cab rust
z2. I was just under 4 square body trucks at the pick and pull today. All had good, straight, rust free cabs, and some had decent beds. The frames were all good and straight, and some even had recent exhaust in good shape. Most had good doors. Of course, all of the interior items and engines were stripped - but a whole running truck won't have that problem.
Seems like you are way better off starting with a good carcass. If you get a running truck and are not particular when it ships, a car hauler can bring it to you for about that $850 price. $1500-$2500 gets you a fairly decent fixed up old square that needs interior work, but many have decent bodies and recent paint. Some already have rebuilt engines and trans. Considering the cost of gas and lodging, you are better off having a square shipped to you rather than fly out and drive one back. |

Re: My cab rust
i think im gonna end up buying a rust free cab from where down south and getting it shipped here. Everthing else is pretty good shape or easy to fix and it runs great. It already has a crate 350 and t400. I just need to start cleaning of the frame and looking for a cab.

Re: My cab rust
My 86 came from Michigan and the cab and bed were beyond repairing. Living in Florida now, finding a replacement cab and bed was pretty easy. Although most of the cabs I found were for 2wd/auto trans truck. I used a 2wd/auto trans cab and cut the hump out of my old cab to make a removable cover.
The work is not hard just time consuming. My advice, take a ton of pictures of how all the wires, vacuum lines, duct work and everything else is ran so you can put it back the same. Also label all the wires. Cabs in northeast Florida were selling for about $200.
