67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

I bought a cheap welder a few days ago and I figured I should put it to good use this weekend, AND since my window regulators didn't come in this weekend like they were supposed to, I decided to install my blazer tank and fuel filler door off of a '96 silverado (I think S-10 doors are the same).

I laid out where I wanted my filler door to go and trimmed it out. I used as much metal as possible from the donor truck, because you will see in the pics my fender has a lot of dent damage. I then made a cardboard template and marked out on the fender where to cut. Don't forget to measure twice!!! I then drilled holes in the corners and used an air cut off wheel to cut the door hole out. I then welded the new door in. This was my very first attemt at using a mig welder, so please excuse the really crappy looking welds.

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

Here's some more pics of the crappy welds I did, and the finished product. I did not have time to remove the old fender to "see" what it would look like on the truck, sorry fellers.

Now that I finally have the door installed, I can now go crazy with the hammer and dolly getting this fender straighter so I don't need to use a gallon of bondo

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

The blazer tank was not so much fun. I wasn't able to take the bed off (no help this weekend) and it had to get done... so I laid on my back and got a sparks shower while I removed the little spare tire crossmember thigy and I also removed the rear bed mount.

I mocked up the tank to see how it would fit. I couldn't get the straps to work longways so I turned them the other way. They did have to be cut shorter and I think I might have cut them too short. Oooops. Oh well.

I pulled the tank back out and went to the parts store and got muffler fittings to match the tank and the '96 filler neck size. I then welded these parts together. I did it like 3 times cause I was afraid it would leak.

I painted everything with a truck bedliner after taping off the fuel sending unit. I then hooked up all the hoses (cause you can't get to them once the tank is in, IF the bed is ON) I blocked off the small hose next to the filler neck vent tube, I won't be needing this. I then ran some steel line along the frame rails to my fuel filter and then the tank. My vent line will run from the tank to under the hood where a motorcyle fuel tank check valve thingy will act as a vent for the tank itself (haven't purchased this yet.)

The tank then went up in place, put some liner stuff between the tank and frame, and the straps and tank and tightened it all down. I then hooked up my lines and my sending unit (which works great). I put some gas in it and it fired right up!

I don't understand why my truck is different than others, but my tank was not visible from underneath at all. The tank is installed in the second pic as well.

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

Forgot the pics of the filler neck. It is REALLY tight under the bed between the frame, but it does fit! The first pic is the filler neck before I added the additional piping. When I filled the tank there were NO LEAKS!.... yet....

You'll also notice I had to bend down one of the edges of the tank, this was to clear the panhard bar mount on the frame. It fit fine after it was tweaked a bit.

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

The final order of business was removing the old tank (WOOOHOOOO!), welding in a patch, and making everything pretty! Once again, my welds are butt fugly, but they held

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

I forgot to add that the stupid filler neck is RIGHT WHERE the old bed cross member was. I was going to just trim it to fit around the tank, but now I have to move it forward about 2", (if it can be). I'll mess with it once the bed is off. I know others have said it's fine without it, but I stepped on my bedwood with the cross member off and they flexed a lot! Not only that, but it's what my muffler was bolted too... so now the tailpipes are floppin in the breeze

While I was under the truck I was happy to see that my rear differential hadn't leaked a drop. I changed the gear oil and put a new seal on about 2 months ago.

Looks pretty good to me. Wonder why you had to run your straps crossways? Maybe something to do with your tank being higher (not showing)

Looks nice in there. I had to play with my straps a good bit till I got a neat fit side to side.

I really don't know. The angle iron you see in the pics on the side of the tank had two holes drilled in the tank and two tabs from the angle iron piece that stuck up through the holes. These tabs fit perfectly into two existing holes in the frame, so the tank is sitting nice and square. I could not stretch my straps to reach longways around the tank. I kind of like where they are now. The exhuast does have several inches of clearance. Only thing I don't like is that the filler neck sits exactly where the bed crossmember needs to go

This thread was brought back from the dead.

I'm guessing a blazer tank, but could be wrong.

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

Holy crap, I did this a long time ago

It's a 69-72 Blazer Tank.

Truck's been done for quite some time. Aside from having to fill it up slower, it works great.

I did not notice the dates on the thread at first and could not figure out what the hell was going on with your truck. I was not on the board in 06 and could not figure out why your truck would be in primer or why you would be working on a stepside when I know you picked up a fleet. My head hurts.

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

During the installation of the tank...did you have to cut out the bottom rail of the bed in order to fit the bed on top of it? Or how did you work that out?

Re: 67 stepside fender filler and blazer tank INSTALLED!

I don't use my truck bed for anything except to haul garbage bags to the dump, so I just took it out. I have a wood floor (support rail just unbolts and it comes out) and it majorly flexes when I stand over the tank area. I would recommend cutting the support rail to fit over the tank. I thought about cutting it and putting it back in, and now I can't even find it.

When I put the fleet bed on someday, I will be trimming the support rail to fit around the tank. I've also seen where people weld a couple sections of flat steel across the cut open area to give some strength back to the rail. I don't want my nice steel floor to bend when I stand in the bed.

If you had asked back then I would have given it to you, aside from being rust free, this fender was a beat up POS. I banged it out the best I could and it's still full of bondo... I'm not very proud of that, but it's hard to find decent fenders.

Try using the "advanced" search function and different key words like "rear license plate filler" "Falcon" or "Mustang" or any other car "Camero" that has a rear behind the plate filler. The information is here if ya just look for it.
