WANTED: Dual Battery Isolator & Harness
We (me) are working on a 1970 4x4 that came from the factory with a dual battey option. Unfortaunately, the original owner modified the harness and changed the isolator. We need the original isolator and harness for our project. If anyone can help, please contact me at our office by email or phone. Thanks in advance!!!
PS - There is a good chance that BROTHERS will be reproducing an original style dual battery kit so trucks not originally equipped can be converted. We will keep you posted on the status of this kit should we decide for sure to go forward with it.

What is an isolator? I just took apart a 1970 longhorn camper special. The wiring harness had been spliced a couple of times, but if there is something else you can use let me know. Both battery trays are in really good shape if you need them. Mark

The isolator is the part of the system that separates the batteries so they can operate independently. The aftermarket one that was on the truck we have looked like a small stereo amplifier. To be honest, I'm not sure what the factory isolator is suppose to look like 'cause our truck didn't have it. According to Wes at Classic Heatbeat, he's sending us a harness with the isolator included. Thanks for the offer on the tray and stuff. We may end-up needing extra parts if we decide to create a kit so I'll keep you posted. As always, this board and it's members have proven to be an awesome resource, thanks everyone!!!

How about $50 plus shipping for both the regular and auxillary tray. The trays are very solid. No rust through or bubbling type rust. Just surface rust. Should clean up real nice. If your interested I can get pics.

Does anyone have a picture of what this factory set-up should look like?
My longhorn is supposed to have dual batteries but when I bought it all that is under the hood is the second battery tray with some wires that stop at that location

The factory isolator is a heavy duty relay. Ties into the ignition and links both batterys together when the key is on to charge them both, separates them when the key is off. Not the best setup IMO. If one battery develops a short or weakens faster than the other it can cause problems. The charging system sees the two as one. A true isolator makes sure the battery that needs charging gets charged and prevents one battery from affecting the other. I cant see any reason for doing it the way it was done 30 years ago except for somebody wanting to say its original or some concours resto (which you may be doing). There is a schematic in the 72 sevice manual.

Is this what you are describing? How do the little eyelet connectors attach to a battery terminal?
As you can see all I have is the rotten battery tray and the wire terminals. I'm just not familiar with this set-up.

Old or not Dual battery's is really handy for anyone operating an our year of truck when equiped with a plow...I've looked at a few (beater)trucks with plows and the owner has rigged up sum shoty looking dual battery setup due to the power needs of running the hydraulic pump...I've always thought it would be nice to know or be able to purchase a old style setup to run to dual battery's properly if I did get myself a plow truck...

my truck came with dula batteries and camper wiring so I am assuming this is a factory isolator?

From what I've gathered so far and what Wes @ Classic Heartbeat has sent me, that looks like an aftermarket isolator similar to the one my truck had. The harness Wes sent me has the factory isolator and it looks like a plain ol' relay like on an A/C unit. Too busy right now moving to post any pics, but if I think about it after the chaos, I'll put some up. Thanks
