Change of plans .....
Had initially planned to pull the cab and have the frame blasted and then paint it but have decided to take a different direction. Upon inspecting the cab mounts (they look great) and then wiping down the frame a bit it really didn't look to bad.
So with some extra time on my hands a pal and I got this done today... Having a motor and tranny in it sure makes it seem more like a truck than a collection of parts

If you want a compromise you could also try prepping and etching the frame and then applying POR-15 with the cab still on.

Thanks. It's getting cleaner by the day Pulled the floor mats and such in order to cut out the low hump to fit the trans and there was some pretty good surface rust in the center of the pan but looks like I'm here in time. Fortunately worst of it came out with the hump.
I've only found one pin hole in the right rear cab corner and I'll cut that out at some point but it can wait. On a similar note, what's the best way to address the door skins? I haven't pulled the door panels to look inside yet but suspect I know what I'll find. Can this rust be stopped simply by wire wheeling it down on the inside and repainting or does the exterior paint need to come off as well??

You need to address the exterior rust also or it will come back...I replaced my door skin corners and a door skin also. You can check out my album for pictures. You can buy door skins(lower) and door bottoms and weld them in...Then treat the metal rust resistance primer inside and out. I the door is in good shape and the rust thru is located in a small section then you would be money ahead fabbing small patches. No easy answer, just dig in and see what you have to work with...

My truck was the same way as yours. Once I started cleaning the frame it wasn't as rusty as I first thought. So I did my own change of plans. I did my own light blasting, cleaned, primed ( heavy rust) and painted it with semi gloss rustoleum. I know it's not the same as POR 15 but this is a hobby truck and I am doing a cheap build. Plus my thought was its better than whats was on it. I bought the primer and paint in quart cans and sprayed it on after the prep work. I think the primer does a good job and I hadn't had any problems with flaking on the frame. Here is some pics of the outcome for another way. Good luck!

I concur if you can stay away from tearing it completely down that is the way to go. by the way its great looking truck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-43Tm1wjOc4 Need to rebuild or replace the carb as it's pretty beat up and the pump isn't working..... anyone got a nice H series kicking around? Installed a new master cylinder and got the brakes sorted. Cool to find the original GM hubs still on the truck [/IMG] Need to get a slightly shorter fan spacer as the one that came with the 292 doesn't have quite enough clearance. But the big surprise of the day was the bees nest filling up the top of the radiator... All and all a good day now to find a driveshaft so I can take it around the block.

I might have a carb but just don't know how good it is. Might go up to the shop next week sometime.
