T-56 In my 84

my dad has offered to buy/build a motor and transmission for me. we initially had talked about putting a Muncie in my truck, but i offered up the idea of the T-56 since we've had trouble finding a good Muncie, and i sure would like them two extra gears. i haven't done much looking around yet, but what kind of price can i expect on a used T-56 out of an F-Body ( i assume that's where most people get em)?

are there any tips ya'll can provide when shopping for one of these trannies?

anywhere from 500-1000 friend of mine has one in a 95 gmc maria conversion truck 4th gear is 1-1 like a th350 so the two extra gears will help alot.

your gonna have to put a hydralic clutch out of a 86 or 87 model and do some kinda custom line cause they use a plastic line i think

I know they have the internal slave cylinder ive got an article in a hot rod magzine where they drill out some line restriction for better clutch activation ill dig it up if you wanna hear about it.

Unless your running a very mild cam, 6th gear might be useless w/o the right differential gearing. Keep the engine torque as high as possible @ cruise rpm. Also, make sure your d.shaft is well balanced.

Keisler Automotive makes a retro-fit t-56 that uses the old style push clutch/throw-out bearing set-up (a stock early bellhousing works) so you don't have to go hydraulic. This trans is also based on a Viper trans re-fitted w/GM shafts.

5th and 6th are overdrives, with 6th being a .50 [thats massive] so a 3.73 rear gear would be minimum with this trans and any motor with a bigger then stock cam.

i don't quite understand what you're saying

3.73 is as high a gear as i would want to run, is that what you're saying?

I think that is so. I have 3.08 on my truck with a 305 & a TH700 (overdrive is .75 on 700's) I am at 2100 RPM at 90 mph. With that low of gears on a 6 speed, you could never get up to top speed. It would keep you from running at peak perfomance.

Im running a 3.07 rear also with a 2004r [.67 overdrive] and 255/60/15 tires. This means Im at 80mph doing about 2000rpm. I have a stock cammed vortec 350 in front of it, and its making over 300ft/lbs at 2000rpm. Even so its still loaded pretty good. Now imagine putting the engine down to about 1500rpm at the same 80mph. Your not going anywhere when you push the go pedal, and a larger then stock cammed motor is going to be bogging at this RPM even cruising. So 3.73's would be the minimum, with 4.10's are larger being the only direction away from 3.73's Id go.

Also, too add to Toms info.... his mildly cammed combo is 'starting to load' @ 2000rpm, if you run a taller tire you will definitely want to run even deeper gears (min 3.73's, even better 4.10's).

A regular O.D. (.68 or .70) is what the trucks use because of the large frontal area that must be pushed through the air. You could utilize 6th for all out banzai blasts & just use 5th for typical hwy cruise speed.

Alot of LS1 f-body guys are swapping to 4.11's or 4.56's w/t56's & still getting decent hwy rpm's & serious eyeball flattening acceleration.

i'm going to end up running a 295/40 20 rear tire, so what ration should i run in the rear?

also, i drove a 94 Z28 with a T56 and 4.10's, and lets just say ! would take off in 3rd if you wanted, and that thing would rip your nuts off

See, a 295/40/20 is almost 30" tall vs. that 25.75" tall tire on that 94 Z28. I would say 4.11's w/a mild cam (under 220 duration), 4.56's w/any cam bigger.
