GMC Engine #: 228I82048
I have looked at many "inline" sites and messages/boards and cannot find instructions on decoding the # stamped on the engine block of my '48 GMC 3/4 ton truck? I want to be sure this is the engine that came with the truck originally. Help please.

on the right side of your block, about an inch behind your distributor, there should be a 3 inch tab on the block. This has a serial number that you can use one of the many translators (LMC has one in their online catalogs) to see if it matches the year of your truck.
oh yeah welcome to the site. |

You would have to hunt the net a bit and the source that I thought had the info didn't show it but I am pretty sure that GMC had a running serial number from year to year.
From what I can figure out that is a 228 engine number and the 182048th one built. Some info here on ID of the engine http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/Photos/GMC_Numbers.htm

A thousand thanks for taking the time. I'll continue to search to be absolutely sure. The "I" might signify which plant it came from. Will keep you posted.
