My Free 1969 C50

Hey Guys/Gals im pretty new to the heavy haulers so heres mine

This truck was found on a mine that my father in law bought, the truck had been abandoned and left to rot so he rescued it and brought it home from Quartsite AZ to buckeye AZ in the middle of the summer (he's crazy)! after doing some work for him he handed me the title,

The truck has a 292, sm465, T150 2 speed rear, 14 foot flat bed, widowmakers. pretty standard
its only got 56000 miles and runs awesome!

plans are to make it a pickup!
I bought a box off of CL for $40 its a little ratty but thats ok...

some of the questions I have about it are about brakes mainly
Does anyone have part numbers for rear brake parts as well as front end
it has zero stopping power at the moment.

I wrote this up yesterday take a look on ebay they make wheel blanks that are 22.5 and come in 12.25 wide (super single) or 8.25 wide

Haha...yea, I just saw that. And you are correct about the F550 wheels. I think they will fit the 10 hole pattern, but the center hole is too large.

With the F550 Wheels I could build an adapter and weld it into the center to make them fit but still they only come in a 19.5 size and tires for that Dia. rim are too small.

I've looked at some 19.5 and didn't think they were too small for a C50. I didn't measure them though. I do know that a lot of 19.5 are a "low profile" tire.

I think some where i saw that the tallest i could get was a 35.6 and with the gearing like I have the truck would be terrible top speed wise granted they weren't fast to begin with haha... I'll look again though

I've got 9.00x20s on the front and 8.25x20s on the rear. I measured today and the rear was around 36" tall.

huh.. I think thats what mine had too lol for some reason I thought they where taller.
It would honestly help if i was near the truck to be able to measure...

I am building my second C50 pickup. The first one I rebuilt all of the drum brakes and it was an expensive pain. After it was all done I still had the widow makers.
I gave up on my C50 wheel issue and I am swapping out my rear with a Topkick rear end semi style 22.5's. (I wanted Super Singles anyway) I cut the frame from the TopKick and welded it on to the C50 frame pickup length. Now looking for a fix for the front axle. The Topkicks front axle is a little to wide.

Here is my first 72 C50 (now sold somewhere in Texas)

Most of the brake parts can be found at NAPA. You will need the casting numbers off of the wheel cylinders. I found on mine that the pipe that runs from the top cylinder to the bottom cylinder on the back of the backing plate was rusted. I had to have a local hose shop make me an hose to replace the steel line.
Replace all of the lines, the old ones will fail at the worst time. Split the system front to back with a newer dual style master. If you have a booster under the cab, scrap it and go with a standard style on the firewall.
Adjusting these is a ROYAL Pain. I did this brake rebuild it once and will not do it again. Oh and get help when you go to remove and install the rear drums. Your back will thank you.

did you do wheel bearings too?

No I did not change them, they seemed in fine condition. It is very difficult when you remove/replace the hub to adjust the bearings, it's not like a C10 front bearing adjustment. I had mine to loose and it caused a vibration that took me a long time to figure out. I thought it was the drive shaft or a U joint.
There is a retainer/washer/nut/washer/bearing. The issue is you can not spin the drum/hub assembly to see if the adjustment of the shoe's and bearing is correct.
Oh, do replace the inner seal on the hub to keep the seepage down.
