2000 GMC running hot?
My dad has a 2000 GMC 1/2 ton ext cab P/U w the small V8(size escapes me right now). Last summer he noticed when he towed it would run a little hot. He was convinced it was the transmission bc the truck now has 150,000 + miles on so he had it rebuilt. That did not fix this problem so he went ahead and replaced the water pump but this did nothing either. The truck is not burning oil, using any water ect. Runs perfect but you can put an empty 20 ft HD low boy behind it and it will climb to about 235 or so. Never overheats. Do these lil motors just run hot under a load?

Radiator half clogged either internal or external (Between the condenser & radiator with debris), Seen it many times. If you drove it up to 90mph empty you would get the same result.

If that doesn't work, try a flush and inspect the fluids...also it's the 4.8L v8 is Chevy's small vortec V8

Re: 2000 GMC running hot?
That's the motor. well dad said he replaced the radiator at the end of last summer when he changed the water pump. So he's going to look for any external blockage. I suppose it could be clogged ports in the heads or engine as well or the temp sending unit isn't accurate???

If you haven't figured it out yet......
Maybe check into the fan clutch. Might not me engaging when the temperature increases. Sometimes they will spin with very little resistance when the engine is off. The fan being incapable of pulling a higher volume of air as temp increases would cause your symptoms. Just a thought

Re: 2000 GMC running hot?
I would try tunning of the ECM. Have them Change some stuff around like transmission oil pressure and shift points and fueling. I would suggest it is the torque converter. Was it replaced with transmission? Hope this helps.
