1971/ 1972 Cheyenne differences

Okay guys, call me a noob. Been playing with old Chevy trucks for as long as I can remember. Never really worried about what fit what. Grew up dirt poor, so if it didnt fit, we ground it/ bent it/ or added washers to it. Now, after we went around the mountain to get across it, heres the question...........

Differences between the 71 and 72 Cheyennes. All I have seen so far is the rear view mount. Got one of each, getting ready to make a Frankentruck. Will 72 door panels fit on 71 doors, or are the mounting holes diff? Stuff like that. All help will be apppreciated.

The tailgate handle on a 71 is chromed. In 72 they used a stainless cover that snaps on. The glovebox emblems are slightly different.

The door panels and doors are different on a 72'. Some one may correct me, but I don't think 72 door panels will work on anything but a 72'.

Can you drill 71s to fit the 72 door panels? I know there are alot of smarter people on here than I?

You most certainly can. You should also change the door/window regulators (72s are longer due to door panel thickness) or if you are cheap just use a mallet to beat the handles on.

Scott - I think the chrome vs slip on tailgate stuff/glovebox emblems are just Cheyenne Super things, aren't they?

Only 71 to 72 Cheyenne difference I'm aware of is the rear view mirror mount, door panels, and the disk brake sticker on the tailgate of some 71s is removed for all 72s.

71 had black paint strip on grill and square shoulder on brake line where it bolts to caliper. Most 71's have bulged area where rear view mounts. Rear brake hose also comes out in different area on 72. Sure there is more useless info if you look hard enough.

Yes...only Supers exist in my world

Thank you all..... Wanted to be sure that there werent any major differences.... Will be changing out internals on the doors. Will save the mallet for untuneable carbs.... LOL

I have 72 panels on my 71 Cheyenne Super. Like already noted change out the door actuators and window regulators. The upper chrome trim gets removed and the holes get drilled out.
I like the 72 panels better than the plain Jane looking panels from the 71

My '71 Cheyenne has a chrome tailgate handle- it's an unmolested (and uncared for) survivor with 53K miles. And awesome patina.

There are 3 distinct differences between all '71s and "72s that I know of. The vapor canister is a 72 only part. (epa regs changed for 72 model year). The rear view mirror (as previously mentioned) and the doors. The doors were redesigned slightly for 72. The 72 door has "divot", or indentation for a screw that anchors the wing vent/window post. This does not appear on earlier models. I think the post is different as well. The door panels and attaching methods changed. I dont think that any of these changes would prevent one from interchanging the door or door parts from other trucks as long as you know what the differences are. I have also noticed some minor trim differences from different assembly plants.

Pinging this thread to squeeze a little more info out of it.

For those of you that have frequently retrofit 72 door panels on to 71 (or prior) doors... What size drill bit was used use to open the threads allowing for the 72 plastic clips to grab nicely, but not be too stubborn if they needed to be pulled off? That is, if anyone remembers off the top of their head. Thanks in advance.

The question here is what are the differences between 71 & 72 Cheyennes,not differences between all 71s & 72s or 71 & 72 Cheyenne Supers. I can't think of anything off hand. Cheyennes has a plain glovebox door with no emblem what so ever and the tailgate handles were same as all the others.

I thought that one of the door differences (between '72 vs. earlier years) was in the length of the window winder and opening handle little splined shafts (ie: how much they 'stick out').
To my knowledge the '72 was a little longer due to the increased thickness of the '72 door panel vs. the flatter design '71'.
Anyone want to weigh in on this?
