What happened to my Power Steering?

About a year ago I had a garage convert my 66 manual steering into power steering and everythings been fine except today. For the past few days I have had the truck in the garage on ramps working on a dent in the quarter panel. I backed it our today down the drive and when I went to turn there was a noticable screeching sound that sounded like a slipping belt.
It was damn near impossible to turn the steering wheel to park it in a tight spot we have on the drive.

When I looked under the hood this is what I saw

Any ideas on what might have caused this?

I was going to take it to the garage but wanted to know what in the heck could have happened to cause the pulley on the PS box to bend like that.

Re: What happened to my Power Steering?

Might check to see if there's any fluid in it.
I would imagine the shaft has sheared.
Of course, there's no substitute for a few wrenches and sockets.

Re: What happened to my Power Steering?

From the pictures it looks like the key sheared on the pulley and has been spinning on the shaft. Now worn out enough not to turn the pump. I think if you pull the belts you will find the pulley loose on the shaft. May be time for a new pump and pulley.

Re: What happened to my Power Steering?

it does look like the pulley is NOT square with the shaft ...so very well could be spinning ... so X2 with PGS

Re: What happened to my Power Steering?

It looks to me like the pump shaft is broken. It appears the pump housing is still bolted up square, and only the pulley and shaft are crooked. I think it's time for a new pump, and you'll need to flush the system thoroughly to make sure no debris has been pumped into the steering box. Hopefully the fracture is clean and there are no small bits being circulated.

Upon closer inspection of the 1st picture, I think PGSigns may have the right answer. It looks like the pulley retaining nut may also remain square to the housing and the pulley hub is torn out. No matter what the pump needs to come off.

looks like that pulley is the press on type I don't know just how compatible that pump shaft is with that pulley just a thought .....may not have been the correct one all along

Re: What happened to my Power Steering?

Thanks for all the replies, I had taken it back to the garage that worked on it and asked that he take a look at it. He said all he did was just tighten it all back up and its fine. Somehow things just got loose. It must have been an optical illusion on the PS looking all bent up at the shaft cause he said it wasnt bent.

The pulley and brackets were from Allen Grove back back when I had this garage correct a previous garages mistakes on power steering conversion parts.

At the time I was trying to get the alternator bracket sorted out to get rid of the screeching sound that kept happening. This thread pointed me in the direction of the brackets and pulleys I have now.

Re: What happened to my Power Steering?

It's possible that tightening it just matched the face of the nut with the face of the pulley pulling it back into alignment. The key may still be gone and the pulley may still be wallowed out in the middle. I would keep an eye on it.

from years of experience properly tightened bolts don't just loosen up ... does the pulley run true (no wobble)when the engine is running? any pics of what it looks like now?
