I'm putting the steering column back together, on my 86 stepside, that the PO tore apart and found that the little ball on the end of the shifter lever on the column is broke off. I've looked and can find the lever for an auto trans but can't seem to find one for a 3 on the tree. Does anybody know of a source for these? Will one from an earlier model work

I found a complete truck in the local junk yard couple months ago and posted id get the column if someone wanted it. I'm sure it's gone but I'll try to get there this week and see if it's still there. Don't see three on the trees very often in squares.

The 1985-86 3-speed manual column shift lever seems to be GM P/N 14007618, "Lever, Trans Control."

Good luck finding one. I rebuilt my 82's 3-speed column earlier this year and ended up have to fabricate some parts and shim some others. Fortunately my lever is OK, but the shift bowl where it connects is held together with epoxy. I just found a blank shift bowl (below) for a floor shift truck in case I have to go that route someday.

I may end up going this route. The interior is in such good shape that I kind of hate to cut a hole in the floor, but I had much rather have a floor shifter than a column shifter. I'll finally have a couple days off this next week, so I'll go hit some of the junk yards and see what I can find.

If you convert to a floor shifter and want to clean up the column, the "blank" replacement for the shift bowl is GM#7812754.

Also, be sure to buy a tall shifter. Hurst makes one specifically for trucks.

I'd be curious to know what you end up doing, and how well the floor shift works, if you go that route.

Does anyone know if a shifter lever from a '60s-'70s manual cloumn could be modified to work in an '86 column?

Lol I have one you can have. I just converted to a manual transmission. The problem is that Im at college and the lever is at home in my shop. Many miles away. Maybe we can work something out if you still need it in a while.

I really appreciate that jsavage977. However, I was able to finally track one down yesterday, at a dealership in New Mexico. The parts guy at a local dealership here told me it was the only one he showed in the system, ANYWHERE! It was a little more $$$ than I was hoping for, but, it should be here Thursday. I've been back and forth about converting it to a floor shift, but finally decided that the interior is too nice and original to start cutting holes in it.

Paid $1200; sold for $1500 a few years later. Just a hint at the appreciation that was coming. Retired as a factory automation products salesman. Worked part-time over the years for an engine builder and a classic car repair shop. Member here for 24 years! This is the very first car/truck Internet forum I joined.
