1959 trailer hitch

Does anyone know where I can find a trailer hitch for my 59 Apache? I want to pull my old row trolling boat....it only weighs about 300lbs, not much tongue weight

Re: 1959 trailer hitch

Tinyjaime- thanks. I am just wondering if this will work with the stock rear bumper.

Could you possibly measure the vertical drop from the top of the 2" reciever box to the bottom of the truick frame?

Re: 1959 trailer hitch

Here is a shot of mine. It is a brand name, probably from the 70's. I just looked for one that would fit the frame (34" wide) and had the dropped receiver tube. I paid $3 (scrap steel value). My gas tank also mounts on the bottom of the frame so I modified it to side mounting so if I needed to drop it I would not have to worry about the tank (or visa versa). The wiring connector is mounted behind the bumper on the left side.

Re: 1959 trailer hitch

I got curious and looked at the tag on mine. It's a Draw Tite rated for 5000# towing/500# tongue or 10000 towing (wt distributing)/1000 tongue. It is marked V-5, but I think that is an old model number not class. It is close to todays Class 3 specs. From bottom of frame rail to top of receiver is 5 3/4", it just clears the Fleetside bumper bottom. They still make a similar hitch.

Re: 1959 trailer hitch

I'd look under the back end of later model Chev and GMC trucks at the wrecking yard that sells stuff the cheapest. I don't think the width of the rear frame rails varied much between the second series 55 trucks and 87 trucks. You might have to pull an Orrie mod or two but it should cost a lot less than a new one.

X2 also where do they hide a spare. I have a 52 that I'm getting ideas for and I'm looking at everything I can before I start. Thanks

Re: 1959 trailer hitch

If you do not plan on a fender mount or inside factory type bed side mount then its toss it in the bed, or fab a "box" to hide it. I have seen guys use various themed container with mini spares, but if you slam the truck you would need to make sure the diameter will be large enough. Or get AAA and carry fix-a-flat.
