What's a good catalytic converter for a 402?

I know this is a first-world problem, but I'd like to eliminate the stink of my truck's exhaust. This is true of all of my pre-computer vehicles. It's a nostalgic smell, but annoying. And my wideband O2 says 14.5:1 so they're tuned right.

Anyhow, I'd like to add catalytic converters to my truck. I've used Random cats in the past, but they're not cheap.

My main concern is one that can deal with the fact that its probably going to see a lot more unburned fuel than a Toyota Camry would.

Has anyone done this? I thought I remember someone mentioning it a couple of weeks ago.

Walker Dynomax cats are supposed to be free flowing and efficient. I would swap to fuel injection LONG before I would add a cat to anything that didn't require it.

Why? Millions of cars with carbs AND cats were built in the 70s and worked fine (quality issues aside).

I have fuel injection on my 69 RS/SS and it still stinks. It doesn't matter if the fuel gets in there from an injector or a jet, there will always be inefficiencies in the combustion process that lead to unburned hydrocarbons that smell up your clothes.

Cats loaded up with hydrocarbons tend to overheat and melt down.

If your A/F ratio is good the amount of unburned HC should be fairly low. Of course if there is plenty of overlap in your camshaft it may not be possible to get away from higher HC/CO when idling. Especially with a carb

Re: What's a good catalytic converter for a 402?

The EPA mandated cats because its really not possible to eliminate unburned hydrocarbons entirely. As I think I mentioned, combustion isn't perfect, particularly far from your torque peak, like at idle.

I have no plan to load up my cats, as I plan to properly tune the engine and I run unleaded gasoline. Any cat should survive in that environment (esp. as I'm running the factory cam, carb, manifolds, heat stove, choke, PCV, breather, and everything else).
