Intro / brake help!

Heya everybody,

I used to have a 67 chevy project that went nowhere. I never really got into it because that's not really the model I like. It was more a purchase of opportunity. I sold that a while ago and have recently bought a 65' the year I've wanted since I was a little kid.

I'm from Chattanooga Tn and Yadda Yadda Yadda I gotta problem.

Soooo I'm trying to do the single to dual res master cylinder switch over that chief rocka did and posted on these very forums. I got the lines split and a new 67' MC bolted in and hooked up. It's a drum drum setup. The problem is that when I gravity bleed the brakes the front brakes don't drop after the air bleed. I get nothing but fluid and foam. The rears bleed normal ( pump pump pump hold bleed pedal drops air escapes repeat) when I take the truck around the block and stand on the brakes, the rears lock up and the front do almost nothing and it creeps to a stop eventually.

I triple checked for leaks and can't find any.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hmmmm nope. Mc didn't come with a bench bleed kit. Thought I could get away with just bleeding at the line after I bolted it up.

Re: Intro / brake help!

If your master is moving some fluid and you're not getting fluid at the front wheel cylinders, I would suspect collapsed hoses.

Re: Intro / brake help!

I'm getting fluid to the bleed valve. Could it be getting there but not to the wheel cylinders?

there would have to be fluid inside the wheel cylinder, in order to come out the bleeder. theres 2 small ports inside the wheel cylinder one for the fluid from the line and one to exit the bleeder.

Re: Intro / brake help!

Are your wheel cylinders mounted with the bleed screw to the top ? If not u will never get the air out.

Yep mounted to the top.

I noticed my dad's 68' chevy which is also manual drum drum has a valve block right next to the MC. It came stock. Is that a proportional valve? He's got an extra one off a parts truck. I could try it out.

Re: Intro / brake help!

No, that is not a proportioniong valve. It is simply a distribution block.

Re: Intro / brake help!

a distribution block would allow for a one ( or two) output MC to feed more than one WC.

Like a splitter if you will.

assuming you have both of your hands and some of your fingers that would be all you need to bench bleed it

Re: Intro / brake help!

I did last time I checked...

How do I bench bleed without the fittings and hoses running back into the fluid? Am missing something aside from digits?

you do it like every old timer mechanic does it. stick it in a vise, push the piston in, put a finger over each port to seal it, release the piston, repeat

Re: Intro / brake help!

Cool! Learn sometin new!

Thanks

I think I'll take the mc off, bench bleed it reinstall, adjust the front brakes to make sure there moving out enough and rebleed from start to finish.

Any body got tricks for adjusting the front brakes?
Also what order should I bleed the individual wheels? Ice asked a few people and gotten different responses.

Thanks again

Re: Intro / brake help!

That is something that I disagree with, with most people. I always start with the left rear since that is the farthest from the master cylinder. Most will say the right rear is the farthest, and it is.....in a straight line. The rear brake line comes from the master or prop valve, across the front crossmember and then goes down the right side frame rail to the rear. Then it drops down to the differential, and across to the left rear wheel. That makes the left rear the furthest down the line from the master cylinder.

Start at the left rear, then right rear, right front and then left front.
