Temp issues

87 TBI 350. Temp on gauge never gets above the "1/4" temp line. As you drive down the interstate in TX (over 100 degrees outside) the choke light comes on. What should I be looking at to fix this issue?

Re: Temp issues

Probably a bad engine temp sensor. I just had this same problem a month ago and that was it. Also if the choke light come on while driving it means you are way low on oil. That is the warning for low oil as it is wired into the choke circut to alert you when it's low.

Re: Temp issues

Replaced Temp sensor and the truck does seem to be running better but the choke light still comes on after about 30-45 mins of driving. Oil isnt low but I will check again tonight. Never heard of the oil causing the choke light to come on.

I never new either till I couldn't figure out why it kept coming on while driving. I read that they wired the warning system from the oil pressure sensor to the choke light so it comes on while driving to alert you something is wrong. Hos much oil pressure are you running? Maybe a bad oil pump and it isn't putting out enough pressure and is setting of the choke light as a warning.

And we have a winner! LOL I feel a little stupid saying this on the forum, but I was investigating last night and remembered that this dash is a tach dash for an older truck (78, if I remember correctly). So the choke light is where the check engine light would normally be ( I think)... Now to figure out why the light is coming on but only after about 30-45 mins of driving!!!
