Re: NV4500 trans for a hotrod 292?

Closer ratio, which makes it a little stronger as a result (thus the rating).

Here’s a mph vs. rpm graph of the NV4500 in my ‘65. The red lines represent 4.57:1 gears and the green lines are for the 4.10s. I think this tranny was from a ’92 and has the 6.34:1 1st.

As you can see from the curves, the worst rpm drop is between 2nd and 3rd at around 1700 rpm. The spread effectively gets narrower with a higher final drive ratio and/or smaller tires.

Re: NV4500 trans for a hotrod 292?

Yeah, 2-3 is the big gap with both the SM420/465 and the later NV4500.

For TJ's hot-rod 292, if he shifts @ 5,000RPM he will be turning only 2,500RPM when he lets the clutch back out--not really my idea of a hot-rod trans.

By comparison, take the "wide-ratio" Muncie M20 4 speed I might put in my Impala:

5,000RPM into 2nd = 3,700RPM, into 3rd = 3,800RPM, and into 4th = 3,400RPM.
