Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
Quick & Dirty:
Roll the engine until the harmonic balancer/timing mark is at 0 degrees. Pop the distributor cap. If the rotor is not pointing at the #1, or #6, terminal then most likely the timing chained has slipped and your cam (& ignition) timing is out the window. Then you can go from there.

Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
Ditto what LJ Said. While you have the cap off use a socket to turn the crank clockwise until the rotor moves. Now turn the crank in the opposite direction and note how many degrees you have to turn it before the rotor moves. This will tell you how much the chain has stretched.

Use that test as just one part of your troubleshooting. If it only moves a couple of degrees I'd start looking somewhere else for the issue. If it moves several degrees it may be loose enough to jump time.

Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
Oh boy, this reminds me how my old engine left this world, went for a quick romp around town, idle back in, engine makes bad noises does the whole coasting thing and she was kaput, sad thing was it wasn't going more than 15 mph! I sheared my entire timing gear, piston kissed valves and the highest compression i could coax out of a cylinder was 80 psi, it was a bad day, but hey it was a great excuse for a new engine

Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
Soooooo....a mere 4 years and 8+ months later.... It's running again! Now for some tweakin, adjustin and such. Brakes are down (duh), radiator cap was squiting a lil when I was trying to get it running (weird?), STILL needs more tranny juice (6qts so far), needs exhaust, blah, blah, blah. I'm just happy to report that it actually moved under it's own power (into the garage...still gotta get the timing and mixture set). How's that for the slowest fix for a slipped timing chain ever??

Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
To be fair, I did fix more than the timing chain. Complete re-build and general clean up of the engine bay. I know, I know...that still doesn't normally take almost 5 years. What can I say, I'm slow. Life got in the way. No time, no money, blah, blah, blah....

Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
So did you find anything broken in the engine?

Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
The timing gears were very worn but really nothing was completely broken.

Re: Code Blue! She's down! 911!
I'd say the chain slipped. I've only seen one other on a Chevy V8 and it bent the valves. Consider yourself lucky it wasn't worse.
