How to measure differential bearing preload ?

I'm installing a limited slip in my front axle, 84 K10 with 8.5" 10 bolt, and I measured .013" backlash.
I'm not using a differential spreader because I don't have access to one.
I have not yet removed the existing carrier.
I have a shim set so I can get the same .013" backlash, but I am wondering about bearing preload.
How do I find out how much preload is on the bearings now, so I can arrange for the same amount when I put the new carrier in?
Thanks !!

Re: How to measure differential bearing preload ?

The bearings need to be preloaded but, you cant measure it. I have done so many that it has become a feel thing. If the carrier just falls in, not enough. If it just starts and you see you have to beat it in, obviously that's too tight. I like to get them where they will start but not go all the way by hand but will with some light/medium blows with a rubber mallet.

Try it with the factory shims to see if it will go, if it feels good, torque caps and check backlash, if too much backlash, shim drivers side while removing same amount from pass side(assuming the preload is correct) If too tight, remove from drivers and add to pass like amounts.

A little goes a long way, a .010 move will change backlash approximately .007.

Let me know if you have any questions
