Exhaust manifold baffle???

Seems after removing the intake/exhaust manifold. There is a baffle that can be adjusted. Well in my case someone has tried to spot weld it to keep it in almost closed position. Any thoughts or input before I put all the gaskets back on and re install?

Hopefully a six cylinder expert will chime in but that looks like somebody tried an amateur repair that failed. That should be the valve that directs heat to the carburetor during warm up. Inline engines generally benefit greatly from the exhaust heat on cold mornings. Living in Texas however, cold starts in the morning may not be that much of a problem and you could just eliminate the rod/baffle and plug the holes by welding or by using JB Weld epoxy.

I run a small block Chevy and all manifold heat is blocked off, I don't even have an exhaust heat riser, and since the truck lives in a garage I rarely have trouble starting any time of year.

The other alternative is to find another exhaust manifold that hasn't been "fixed".

Yes, someone welded the heat riser valve open; not really a problem IME/IMO.

My father drives his truck with no manifold heat or choke all year round, and it's never been a problem for him. Slightly balky when it's cold, of course, but once you get out on the road it warms right up.

Same goes for my other truck with a tired 250 that the riser valve rusted out of (that also has no choke).

I wouldn't really worry about it; all it does is make the intake manifold warm up slightly slower (when it's INOP). Unless that's an issue for you, I don't really see much of a need for it (IMO/IME).
