Alternator replacement
My alternator went bad on my 77. So I'm going to get a new one but I want to switch over to serpentine belt system. What all do I need to switch over?

Re: Alternator replacement
Its quite a bit of work/swapping..... You are looking at a new water pump, all the brackets, power steering pump, a different compressor or delete pulley, fuel line rigging and your timing mark probably won't be accessible with aluminum pulleys. Its doable, but if you're in a hurry just put an alternator on it

Re: Alternator replacement
Note that if what you really want is more amps, you can use a GM-12SI style alternator and get 100, 150, even 200 amps with no mods whatsoever. Direct replacement for the stock 10SI.

Re: Alternator replacement
Only thing I would probly want to push with the alternator is a radio. I just like the serpentine belts better. I tried ordering belts off rockauto and they were wrong. I don't have ac either.

Re: Alternator replacement
If you are interested, I have a few ideas to help you out. If you determine that you'd like to swap out your engine harness for a serpentine specific one (if the old wiring is suspect, anyway) I build those and have several on hand. Additionally I stock a conversion bracket which I designed and CNC cut from 3/16 mild steel to adapt a readily available 140A 12/6 clocked GM 6" cased alternator as well. Or, you can still just keep it all stock serpentine and grab a set from a variety of GM vehicles including 88-92 Fbodies, 88-93 S-10, 88-95 trucks, etc just to list a few. A junkyard is your best bang for the buck on a conversion however, if you need to update/upgrade from stock, I have ready-mades harnesses to simplify at least the wiring side of it. PM me if you have questions about any of it!
