steering gear ratio

My 55 steers very hard. I will be changing gear box out for a new one. Any suggestions on a gear ratio to make steering for my wife a little easier. I don't want to convert to power steering.

Re: steering gear ratio

I think that particular size of truck only comes with one ratio unless some aftermarket is making gears sets with lower ratios. A box for a heavier truck might have a ratio that would be easier to turn but those might be a lot bigger physically too.

It is pretty much what you see is what you get on stock boxes.

Re: steering gear ratio

Bad king pins and a dry steering box can make for tight steering

No ratio change for a stock box. you can add PS like this one.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=642396

These are available as a kit for 55-59 3100 3200.

We had to make our own because they didn't have one that fit 47-55 and we were doing a 1 ton. The center link is also different on 47-55.

Re: steering gear ratio

Tire width makes a big difference too. My Chevelle is manual steering and the stock skinny tires on 14" steel wheels steer a lot easier that the 225-15s on Cragars, especially in parking lots.
