new 700r4 question 2wd to 4wd?

Well, I'm still considering Bowtie.com like you guys suggested. But I cam across a 700R4 in a wrecked 2wd suburban that works and is cheap. I can get the engine and tranny for 250 bucks. I'm thinking with all the other mods on my truck I'd like to do first that I might get it. Do you guys know if a 700r4 from a 2wd will go into a 4wd. The suburban is an 87, my truck is an 86. I've heard you have to change the output shaft, is this correct. Thanks guys.

Yes you're correct. The outputshaft has to be changed out but from what I've heard you have to take the whole tranny out of the case to do this. Hopefully someone else will chime in on this.

yep the output shaft will be wrong.

What year is the tranny? Unless you KNOW its a sweet tranny thats good to go for many more miles, it will probably be CHEAPER to buy a new one with the correct shaft already.. after paying for the trans, and the new shaft, and the labor... ugh. then if it doesnt last, double your money lost.

Mike and Brandon Thanks. Sounds like it would be quite a job to switch the output shaft then. You're right about the labor. My truck really needs a few other things and the tranny wasn't on the top of the list right now. Looks like Bow tie can get me into one for about 1400. I thought this might be a cheaper alternative for now, but it sounds like I better reconsider.

I just went through the 2wd tranny in a 4wd thing. I was shipped the wrong tranny for my Blazer. I was going to just pay to get the output shaft changed out, but I was quoted anywhere between $150-$200 to change it so I just sent the tranny back and told them to send me the right one.
