Im think of doing a 4/6 drop on my 71 C10 Fleetside SWB. Is a C-notch necessary or recommended? I don't want to have any problems just have a nice ride. Also need suggestions on rim/tire sizes 15-16-17? Probably 15's TT2's my wife will kill me if I try to go any bigger than that.

With a 6" rear drop your axle will hit without a c-notch

Yes you need one, or you will have a bent frame and broken back...from the axle hitting the frame on every bump.

that's a 4.5 front and 6.5 rear without a notch? I was told from high authority that a c-notch is not necessary? What do you think?

I wouldn't be woried about tire size tickin off the wife. I would however be worried about explaining how you bent the frame without a "C" notch with that much of a drop. And I would imagine the ride would be everything but nice

This is my old c-notch on my '87. I dunno how different the frame's are between the year's but you get the idea. I also don't know for sure the clearance on your ride, but i know on '73 to '87's you don't have to have a c-notch with 6" drop. As long as you remove the oem bumpstop, and add a new shorter bumpstop, you will not have any problem's. Mind you on huge bump's you may bottom out, but for city/hiway use you shouldn't have a problem. BUT, seeing that c-notch's are really cheap and easy to install, i would go for it. Then at least it's done right!

I have the Early Classic Enterprise 4/6 drop on mine and I spoke with them on two different occasions about needing a c-notch. Both times they told me no way do you need a c-notch with the 4/6 drop. I didn't put one in and I think I will have to hit a very big bump or hole to get the axle to hit the rubbers.

1971Stepside, that is what I was told as well. Did you remove the bump stops or trim them? How does it ride? Now that im looking at my truck a little closer im wondering if im gonna have problems with my headers? Damn!

I have run a 4/6" drop for a lot of years with no problems and no c-notch. I also run really stiff shocks and drive cautiously.(not because of the drop, but because its my baby. LOL) I was concerned with frame strength, and I try never to do anything I can't undo later. Good luck, J

Nice thread guys, I'll keep this in mind if I decide to go with a 5 or 6 drop instead of the 4 i have now.
