Thermal plastic bond.

The rubber boot was wore out (like 1969 original gm factory rubber)on the intermediate shaft on my steering column. I took a torch and melted the thermal plastic bond. I've always been a cross that bridge when I get there type of guy. So now I'm wondering if there is a need to replace the plastic with something. I know it should break loose in a wreck and collapse. Do you guys just install it back with nothing at all.
