why such high prices these trucks?

I've been looking for an extended or crew cab 1/2 ton off and on for about 3 months now and can't believe the prices people are asking. These trucks are getting older now have higher mileage and usually need some work but that doesn't seem to effect the price much. People in my neck of the woods are asking $5000+ for a beat up 260k+ mileage truck that needs tires, cluster work, interior redone, every panel and corner dented among other issues. Am I nuts or are these standard prices?

I looked for over a year for a burb around 100k miles. Prices seemed way out of line to me as well, but then when I started to compare to newer trucks, It seemed to make sense.
A buck just doesn't go far. New trucks at $40-50k makes 5k for a beater seem realistic.

I was thinking the same exact thing, I think its that the new stuff is so expensive. And the desirability of the LS based motors drives them up a little too.

I found the same thing a couple years ago when I was looking. I think I lucked into my truck. I also believe it is the cost of new trucks is keeping the cost up of the used. And they are good reliable trucks. You can beat on them and they keep going.

I dont understand it either, KSL is a joke. I looked for 3 months (every hour sometimes, all day long) before finding mine on KSL through a dealer. I think I got a good deal. I paid $8700 out the door and it only had 80K miles. I have had it for 4 months now and am loving it. Good luck with the search.

Ha! I forgot about this. The day after I posted this thread I bought a 99 gmc sierra z71 extended cab! Got a killer deal and I'm loving 20 mpg!!

Patience. I got my 2000 3/4 chevy ext. Cab with 6.0 for $1200. BUT, had no title, no air intake plumbing, needed starter and a radiator, and had electrical problems at steering column, no cold AC, LOL. I fixed issues and at 250k +, it runs well. It came with a flatbed with gooseneck. It's my daily and my tow truck until sold or dead. I do not beat on it just in case. Got about $2300 in it including two new tires. Getting bonded title was the most expensive part.

I blame cash for clunkers , it had a huge effect on the availability of used cars and now we are seeing the effects

I just picked up a 2004 Chevy 2500HD std cab, 2wd last night. I traded my 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer ES and $300 for it. I had $700 invested into the Mitsu....so I have a grand into an '04 2500hd. It was a painters truck,so paint has gotten on some interior parts-no biggie,has a dented passenger side rocker panel, again no biggie, ICE OLD a/c,manual windows and locks,6.0,hydroboost,4l80e...what more could I ask for?
I'm not bragging, but it's all about timing. If you have a small car, someone may want/need to trade. That was my case. The guy I got the truck from had a 3yr old and another on the way, so he needed a small 4dr car. Was a win-win.

Picked up my 104k mile 02 HD for 6250, it needed brakes and a cleanup but runs great.
