Locking Glovebox

Does anyone know if and when it was an option? Mine doesn't have it, and its a fully loaded Sierra Grande, but I feel like I've seen it on other trucks.

I've never seen it listed as an option. My top of the line 69 CST didn't come with one, even though it appears the mounting provision is there.

To the best of my knowledge they were dealer installed, and/or by a locksmith, after the fact....

I thought it was part of the custom comfort and convenience package or something like that? My 72 super had one when I got it and it is keyed to match the ignition and door locks, and I have pulled several from trucks over the years. I dunno, but it's nice to have.

LockDoc has keyed two to match the ignition in my K5 and K20, a nice add. Look for the locking dealer installed gas cap to go with.

I don't know about the key lock but I would give anything to have a handle on the cylinder to open mine with. No I don't want a gate handle on it either.

That's a good point Andy! I would love to have a handle as well. Has anyone installed a lock (with a handle) from another vehicle? Pics?

The spring should pop it open when you push the button if it is not missing or broken....

I have found that replacing the little bumper stops helps "pop" the door open. If they are missing or rotted the door usually just stays closed unless you use your other hand to pull it open while the button is depressed. The new stops help make the door latch tightly so there is some pressure to pop it open.

Hey Leddzepp, great tip! I will have to check my stops to make sure they are in good shape.

Hey LocDock, Thanks for the tip with the spring! I will check it, BTW.. If I find a locking glove box button, can a locksmith make it match my ignition switch from the key alone? Thanks

If, yes. When, don't know. My 72 Cheyenne Super did not come with one, and I wanted one so I went to the U-Pull-It and got one off a truck like mine but don't remember what year it was. My locksmith buddy keyed it to work with my ignition/door key. It did not have as many tumblers as the ignition or the door, as I recall, so he only had to change a few to make it work. Hope this helps.

Here is a nice deal on what I think is an aftermarket set-up for both doors, ignition lock, and glove box lock with keys. I think I might get this for my 68 as I have no keys for it just start fresh with new stuff.

I bought a glove box lock as well as ignition and door locks as a set, so they all had the same key. Mine already had 2 different keys for the ignition and doors, so I spent $40 and replaced them all. Not the cheapest way, but I never like not knowing who may still have keys to my vehicle.

LMC sells one that I am getting ready to order. Because I don't have air conditioning, I leave my windows down a lot. Being able to lock my glovebox would be a big plus for me. I know it's not Ft. Knox, but it will keep an honest man honest.

Keep in mind that's 95% of the battle. If someone's willing to rip apart your dash, even if its only cardboard, they wouldn't mind prying the door open.
