Exclamation Urgent help needed asap

okay here's the deal, I go in for an intensive surgery tomorrow at 6am that is going to leave me in bed for 6 months. Right now its 10:30pm my time. I need to get my truck started to get antifreeze in it. Here's my problem, my fuse block blew so I rewired the ignition and charging system to the exact dot of how member Vettevet told me to and I ran into a problem which I will get to.

Here's a link to my other thread where Vettevet told me how to do my wiring and what switches I am running. In his comment some of the steps are for a non HEI distributor so disregard those as I have HEI.

My problem: I have power to my main toggle switch and I have power to my push button start. When I push the button in to engage the starter to start the engine, the engine starts with no problem. As soon as I release the button, the truck dies. I can't leave the button pushed because it will keep the starter engaged. What's going on here????

I would assume if all you want to do to run it long enough to get antifreeze in It I would just run a power wire from the distributor to the battery use your push button to fire engage the starter and then when you are done disconnect the wire going to the battery to kill the engine

Thanks.

As for the wiring, my friend just told me the same thing you did. Am I going to fry anything in the distributor by running it straight to the battery?

Awesome. Thanks for the replies. I'll update it soon, as I need to go back outside and get the wires ran since I'm going to need a longer wire to reach to the battery. Hopefully my flash light doesn't die. Thanks again.

I use to play around allot with demo derby cars that's pretty much all any of them do for ignition. wire straight from battery to a toggle switch then to the distributor

Re: Urgent help needed asap

I too have a switched MAIN POWER and IGNITION.

See my diagram attached...

From the BATTERY to the STARTER B+...

From STARTER B+ to the MAIN POWER SWITCH.. to the FUSE BLOCK..[Flip on the main power and everything works.]

I have my COIL/SPARK jumped from the MAIN POWER SWITCH then to the DIZZY.
[fuse on the jumper wire for safety]

For the IGNITION I've jumped from the COIL/SPARK switch to the starter.

With this setup.. you must turn on the MAIN POWER.. turn on your COIL/SPARK.. then you are able to hit the IGNITION SWITCH.. In your case it's a push button I use a momentary toggle.

Forgot to add this..

Take a keyed ignition switch for example.. You turn the key on and it powers everything (including your SPARK). Then you turn the key all the way over to power the starter solenoid.

Somewhere your push button seems to have both the SPARK and STARTER SOLENOID wired together.

Best of luck on your surgery my friend.

Hey thanks for the diagram. It'll help me out when I get back up and moving around next year.......sheesh that's a long time. Also, thanks for the luck. Pretty scared about the surgery. They want to do 16 surgery's at once.

Re: Urgent help needed asap

Wreckedchevy and anyone else who may read this thread or my other one in the electrical area, I got it going thanks to wreckedchevy for a way to just get to start to get the fluids moving. It's 4am my time and I just shut the truck off. I got it going at 3a.m.ish. Took a couple hrs as it's really cold outside and I was trying to use my phone as a flash light since my flash light died. Hopefully I didn't disturb any neighbors running just headers for about an hour.

Anyways, thanks a TON to those who replied with helpful information. Does mean a lot to me knowing I can rely on this thread in case of emergencies or anything else where I need a quick answer.

Take care all and I'll be lingering around here in a few days or so.
