1968 C30 dually wheel pics

I got a friend that's giving me a 68 C30 winch truck his family has owned since new . It has original title was used for oil field work. It has the 17.5 wheels and tires that are completely shot. My question is what all dually wheels will work on this truck? What makes and models interchange . I'm interested in pics of the polished or chrome wheels as well. Thanks

factory 16'' dually rims for a chevy, from who knows when to present. I converted mine to the rounded style.

They changed the lug pattern sometime around 2000 or 2001. Anywhere from the 70's to the 90's will work.

I have '97 C3500 wheels, caps, and trim rings on my '67 C-30.

Dodge 16s and Chevy 19.5s

I have a set of Weld rims. On the 67-68 the lug studs are small in diameter and the wheel center opening is small and ride on the hub to carry the weight.

Was wondering if you changed out the studs on your truck. My 67 has the oversize brake and the pre 88 wheels won't fit but found that 16" off of a 2000 will clear but have the 14x1.5 studs? Thanks

I have a 1971 10,000GVW C30 with 1984 rounded chromies. I'm eventually gonna swap them to Alcoa's. Pictures of both wheels installed on the truck below.

You have 17.5" wheels and the truck "was used for oil field work." Um…, well…, are you sure you don't have a 14,000GVW truck. A 14,000GVW truck is a medium duty truck in light duty disguise. Check the GVW on the cab tag. With the exception of farmall's truck all the trucks I see that have posted here so far have 8 lug wheels and are 10,000GVW trucks. I can't tell from the angle of farmall's picture if the truck has 8 or 10 lug studs but the rear end does look like it may be an Eaton HO72 which is a 10,000GVW rear end. The 14,000GVW trucks have Eaton HO110 rear ends with 10 lug hubs on the rear wheels and 5 lug hubs on the front wheels. 14,000GVW wheels have 10 lug holes so they fit universally on both the front and rear axles. The HO110 axles also have larger brakes and the 10,000GVW 16" wheels won't fit over them. So check your truck first. If possible please post a picture of the wheels already on it.

If, in fact, you have a 10,000GVW truck with 8 lug hubs and 13" rear brakes then 16" wheels from 10,000GVW trucks will work. All of the information I am providing hereafter is based on a 10,000GVW vehicle.

As oldiron has previously mentioned "the wheel center opening is small", this wheel center hole is the hubcentric. Regarding proper wheel fitment watch the hubcentric size. 10,000GVW Chevy and GMC duallies are 4.56". Dodge and Ford wheels have the same lug pattern (8 X 6.50") and they will bolt onto a GM product. However, the Dodge and Ford hubcentrics are larger than GMC's and Chevy's (Dodge - 4.77" & 5.16" and Ford - 4.88" & 5.16"). Dodge and Ford wheels won't work on GMC or Chevy trucks. An improper hubcentric won't allow the wheel to center or remain centered on the truck. Incorrect hubcentrics will not support the weight of the truck or a load, a real dangerous situation as you can lose a wheel real fast from the off center vibration. When I shop for wheels I always carry my dial indicator calipers to measure this center hole dimension, always. Borrowing a play from the late Johnnie Cochran, If the wheel don't fit, you must quit.

More than likely you will need to change the 1/2" studs to the later 9/16" studs. The lug studs changed to metric in 2000. If you are going to run aluminum wheels you will definitely need to use the longer 9/16" studs found on the 75-99 duallies. Assuming theta you do have an 8 lug 10,000GVW truck, I don't know when the 8 lug metric pattern wheels began. Alcoa's wheel catalog shows up thru 2000 the GM products wheels lug patten was 8 X 6.50" so anything prior to 2001 should be fine.

Up thru 1970 the wheels were for 1/2" wheel studs, 1971 and up were for 9/16" wheel studs. I think '72 and earlier dually wheels were mostly split rims, you may wish to avoid them. Not that there bad wheels but they are very dangerous and a lot of tire shops won't work on them anymore as their not properly equipped with the required safety cages to inflate them. If you get split rims be real careful because they will, I repeat, WILL kill you or anyone in the line of fire if the ring separates while working with them with any, I repeat, ANY air pressure in the tire. I got rid of all my spit rim wheels for safeties sake.

Please keep us posted on what you find regarding your GVW and your lug stud configuration.

A question. Do we also see a future front disc brake conversion on your new truck?

The chromies are badly neglected with rust, pits and flaking chrome but you get the idea.

The Alcoa's:

The Alcoa's look pretty sweet and carry the benefit of a stronger forged aluminum wheel versus the cast aluminum knock offs out there. I'm gonna do the beefier JB8 brake conversion first before I mount them as that intrinsically has the longer wheel studs I'll need for the Alcoa's. Also gotta pick up a new set of LT238/85/16R Transforce HT's.

Well that and all the new Apitong bed wood and stake sides. Right now it's all a dream but I'm getting there one little piece at a time.

I've seen one off custom wheels before but a "LT238/85/16R" is gonna have to be a heck of a custom tire set. I guesstimate new molds would probably make it a little cost prohibitive though at about $10,000 per tire. Don't forget the spare! Retreads anyone?

But just think, at 3mm wider tread, some additional cornering G forces and all that extra traction, wow, custom super grip racing tires. Now all ya need are some Recaro racing buckets and a couple 5 point safety harnesses. It should have read "LT235/85/16R"

Oh well a couple little corrections, I guess that's what happens when you don't go the extra mile and stop proofreading at 50. Maybe I should have proofread that 51st time.
