Ring and pinion help

Ok so I've got a 10 bolt with a 8.5 inch ring gear. I bought a detroit LSD and a summit ring and pinion. When I went to set the pinion depth I was a little puzzled. I have a depth tool so I'm good there but when I put the pinion in the housing with no shims it was still to close to the ring gear. I don't remember the exact number that it was but for example the number on the face of the pinion was 2.500 and when I put the pinion in with no shims it was 2.590. I don't know what could be causing this. Any help would be awesome and thanks in advance

I have never used one of those tools. Put a .035 shim under pinion bearing. It helps to have a checking bearing that will just slide on and off. Leave off crush sleeve and seal. Install pinion tail bearing and tighten pinion nut until all for/aft movement is gone with slight resistance rolling pinion. Install carrier with slight bearing preload checking backlash as you move closer to fully seated, you want .006-.010. Sounds like your carrier needs shifting to the drivers side.

If the number on the face of the pinion is 2.500" and it checks at 2.590" then isn't the length long, meaning you need to install shims to raise the pinion and shorten the length to 2.500"?

No when I added shims the number got bigger. It's like the pinion doesn't go into the housing enough. And I've double checked the races and there fully seated. I'm just at a loss. Just wanting to see if anyone else has had this problem
