Thanks Slonaker, that looks familiar. I'm pretty sure now that was an Olds engine in that truck. Not bad.

dam Im good

Paul- that olds 350 will last forever and provide great torque all threw the RPM band. It wont make huge HP though Kinda like a 305.....ok forget that part, that might scare you away. Get a 2004R to go behind it if you get a overdrive, that way when its time for a small lock CHEVY you dont need a new tranny.

I used to work for a guy that had a 81 that had that 350 diesel the reason that people put the 350 olds in is because it will go right in place from what i heard the 350 diesel was basically a 350 olds with an injector pump on it and 13-1 pistons The truck he had had a th400 trans Im sure if they didnt change the convertor some kinda odd stuff is bound to go on.

they advised against using the 350 diesel for towing said it wasnt good to have a load put on the engine.

I imagine all you have to do to put a chevrolet sbc in it is get the proper stands the transmission cross memeber should be the same..

Also alot of times them bop trans are fitsall they have an extra set of holes to go onto a chevrolet motor

If you decied to get a motor that will go with what you got you can put a majority of pontac olds buick and cadiallac motors in its place they all use the bop trans bolt pattern

Cadillac engines bolt either on the B.O.P. pattern ?

mmmmmh , that's an interesting news , my current Olds 350 is kinda tired , I presume a Caddy 500ci engine would be better to get a little more torque

We can get old Caddillac hearses for a very little amount of money here in Belgium ( around 2000 US$ )

Gawwleee!! What is the hell is the point of having a smelly, noisy diesel in a truck, if you can't tow with it? I've seen quite a few of those 350 diesels with crankshaft problems. Back when I was a teenager, my dad had an ole' boy drag in a 1981 Sierra, with a blown 350 diesel. We swapped it out for a 350 olds gas engine. It was basically a bolt in. The only conversion we made was to replace the diesel starter with the gasoline engine starter, (The diesel starter wound that 350 over, like it had NO sparkplugs installed!!)and swapped the torque converter. When we tore down the diesel, the crank was in 3 pieces. It had snapped in two places on the main journals. The owner (an older gentleman, who just used the truck for transportation...no towing) said he was driving along at a sedate 50mph and BOOM! No warning and the truck supposedly ran flawlessly beforehand. If I was going to convert to diesel, it would be a 6.2 liter, at the very least. Hey, that's an idea!! Maybe it might do better on fuel than my 454!!

The 350 (5.7L) diesel was designed (if you could say that ) in the 70's during the fuel crisis. The main purpose of this engine was to be able to power a large, heavy vehicle and still get great fuel mileage. A properly geared Oldsmobile with high gears, overdrive, and the 350 diesel could get 30 + mpg. That was amazing, considering the same car with a gasoline 350 at the same time could only get 12 mpg at best.

This particular engine was low on power from the factory, and was only installed in full-size cars and 1/2 ton trucks, not 3/4 or 1 tons. It was all right to tow with one, you just wouldn't get there very fast.

The 350 diesel was based on the 350 Olds gasoline engine, but it used a different, beefier block. In fact, race guys like to use the 350 diesel blocks for racing engines. However, the heads, crank, pistons, nearly everything in the engine was different than the 350 gasser.

The first models were rushed into production and had many problems, most due to poor head gasket sealing. The later models were much better. In fact, a lot are still on the road.

The 350 diesel was used up unil 1985 in the GM cars, until it was finally retired. The 6.2L replaced the 5.7L diesel in 1982 and later 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton trucks, vans, and motorhomes.

The first diesel I owned was a 350 diesel that I installed in a '77 Blazer. It replaced a worn out, gas guzzling 305. I went from 12 mpg, to 22 mpg. However, I lost a little power. I eventually replaced it with a 6.2L that got about the same mpg, but had much more power. The result was a full size Blazer that got 20 mpg and had as much power as a healthy 350. I was hooked on diesels!

Just thought I'd share a little bit of my passion for diesels!!

Hey Casey, I believe this truck is still sitting in the same spot with the same tarp on it.

Me and my dad cut a deal on a '96 that we found. Been a few weeks now. It's like i'm driving a car, not a truck. It's growing on me, but I miss having something I can tinker with. I'm pampered with all this luxury, like power steering, windows, mirrors, a/c.... I like it, but I miss the noisy old truck feeling, power nothing, noises, bad ride and all. This truck has no character.

That's cool!

I know what you mean. I love driving the newer vehicles and riding in pure comfort, but I also love wrenching on the older ones. You'll just have to get you an old junker to work on now!
