1970 Cheyenne Super

Hi did they make a 1970 Cheyenne Super I saw one at a show and it was in vert good shape could of used a new paint. He says that is all original except for a motor swap from a 1971. He said it has a 400 in it with 373 gears and it is an auto w/ factory air and all other options. I thought that the cheyenne came out in 1971? what is the difference in the cheyenne and the super is it the 400?

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

Custom sport truck was top of the line for 1970, then the Cheyenne package replaced it in 1971. They also added the Cheyenne super package in 1971.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

Yeap, no such thing as a 70 model super. When you say 400 was it the big block? To the best of my knowledge chevy never put the small block 400 into any 67-72 chevy trucks.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

...correct if I'm wrong here guys but I think the Cheyenne Super option was a 1972 option only? with the Cheyenne being the top 1971 option.
In GMC's case the equivalent to my understanding was a 'Sierra' and then the 'Sierra Grande'.
Either way I definitely agree with the guys that in 1970 there was no Cheyenne Super option available...the guy has simply rebadged his truck....happens alot.
All good

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

The 400 could be a reference to the fender badge which stated 8-400. It was for a 402. Yes, there was no Cheyenne available in 70 but, this is the first truck body style with a catchy name like Cheyenne attached to it. Couple that with the C-10, Custom 10, and CST badges and any uninformed person can confuse them. Same with the engine. I have heard people reference these trucks as "cheyenne's" all the way to 67.

To give the guy the utmost respect, he's simply an uninformed owner who doesn't know much about his truck. CST to him could have meant Cheyenne Super Truck and the 400 was taken literally.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

Thanks for all of the replies so fast. I was thinking about buying it he wants 12-14,000.00 for it. I think that is a good price it is in good shape it could use a paint job to make it mint. it is white with red interior. Small block 400 w/AC. I have seen these trucks for alot more and I wanted to see if this is a good deal also. I don't mind if it is a cheyenne or cst I would probably re badge it when it gets painted. Does this seem like a great deal or just OK?

Now that pictures are posted, its a nice looking truck, but original.... no. If you like the truck, and the price he's asking, go for it!

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

Looks like either flaking paint or rust on the passenger side bed. Look at the radiator support, front fender crowns, inner fender wells, rocker panels, rain gutter, bed floor, and cab supports for additional rust. Is the SPID still on the glove box door? If so post a picture and folks here can help you determine how the truck was originally equipped and if it is a long bed that's been converted to a short bed. One last question, does the VIN start with CE or CS? CE is a v-8 truck and CS would be originally six cylinder.

There was 1970 GMC Sierra Grande's though, but no on the 70 Cheyenne's or Supers, only CST's. I also own a 71' Cheyenne Super.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

YE9 Cheyenne Supers were released for production in April of 71. While hard to find they are not unknown.

Without seeing a SPID I'd have a hard time even calling it a CST. The truck has the two-tone only paint seperation moldings on the cab back indicating it has likely had a color change.

In any event its not "...all original" nor have "....and all other options."

Z84 Cheyenne and YE9 Cheyenne Super were trim options for the most part without model, engine or transmission restictions.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

I got the vin and other options and I used a decoder and I think it was a regular shortbed with a 6 cylinder in it. Let me know what you think and what do you think it is worth? I really want an original CST or Cheyenne and a super would be a bonus. I know that they are much more money in good condition. If this truck was cherry I may still be interested in it for now. The problem is if I get it for 10-12,000 and put 5-8,000 in it will it be worth it. Or should I just wait and get the right one down the road. I Have enough other cars and trucks to keep me happy for now. Here is the numbers that I got

I would say "Try again" is a good way to think of this truck. Just forget it and keep looking imo.

Yeah, I would walk away from that truck. In California you can find that truck in comparable shape for 3000 all day long. IMO you would likely regret buying it - there are always more issues with these trucks than what you originally saw as a buyer.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

Even if you decide to purchase, ensure all the numbers match - frame, VIN plate and SPID. The asking price is top dollar for a modified / add on truck. Looks like a bare bones C/10 or custom out of the factory.

I believe for that money, with some patience and a willingness to travel, you could find what your looking for.

Agree. Therefore, this truck would have come with the base 307 V8 since no optional engine is shown on the SPID.

Also note that the fender emblems are all in the 71/72 locations including the engine badge for optional engines under the side marker. It makes me wonder if, at a minimum, the fenders were replaced.

Tread carefully and follow D. PASSMORE's advice.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

I would not buy that truck for what he's asking. You can't get *a lot* more truck with $14k.

I have a 71 Cheyenne Super Big Block. It needs to be restored but I do have it tagged and insured. I took it on a 160 mile trip this past weekend with no problems. I paid $2800 for the truck this past June. Click on the link in my signature to go to my website for more pictures.

On second thought...I'll GLADLY sell mine for $10,000 and since you're in VA, I'll even deliver it to you and have the gas tank full when I get there!

Anyway, just keep looking and don't buy on impulse.

Re: 1970 Cheyenne Super

It's best not to buy a restored truck from someone who knows nothing about it. It was obviously done a while back, so who knows what was done, what is needed, or what it will be needing. Before people got better informed by websites like this (and once repro emblems were made) guys seemed to feel everything had to be a Cheyenne Super. But, they were usually not done right, since they didn't know all the details. There were never Cheyenne Supers with red interior, for one thing. Now we all know it's totally cool to find a Custom or Custom Deluxe loaded with options. in fact, some of us think it'd cooler to find a lower trim level truck with more options than a Cheyenne Super
