Sm465 clutch opinions

I am looking for opinions on what clutch to put into my truck. I'm usually cheap but even at the lower price points there are options.

I have a 67-72 k20. 327, sm465, np205, dana 44, 14 bolt rear. Currently the transmission and transfer case are out of the truck. The throw out bearing has been making noise but has been that way for years. I do not use my truck very much.

I know there are options of 11" or 12", diaphragm or borg and beck 3 finger type. It sounds like 11" diaphragm is a softer pedal that can be slipped but can burn out the clutch quicker. The 12" borg and beck is stiffer and acts like an on /off switch.

What do you all prefer and why?

Re: Sm465 clutch opinions

not sure if this is helpful but on my sbc that is connected to the same sm465,np205,d44,14 bolt ff rear end I have been using this although its a 11 3/4 inch clutch, I was trying to replace the 3 finger style I originally had but had no luck local so thought id go the diaphragm style they had to avoid the shipping costs for the 3 finger clutch and have had no problems with them so I ended up purchasing 2 other luk sets and they are holding out well on the trucks.

Luk RepSet p.n 04-064 came with pilot bearing(I used a bushing instead),throw out bearing, clutch, and pressure plate with tool I think I payed about $125 from the local dealership

Re: Sm465 clutch opinions

I am leaning towards another diaphragm clutch. I measured mine today and it is 11". Would the flywheel have a different bolt pattern for the 11 3/4 or 12" set up. 12" liked like it would be a tight fit to where my bolts are.

Re: Sm465 clutch opinions

If it is a 14'' flywheel it may double drilled, regardless, using the 11' will work out just fine with the 327. The diaphragm clutches are a lot easier on the linkage parts on these older trucks and have nearly the same clamping pressure. I had a borg and beck style in a truck years ago and ended up bending the rod that passes through the cab.

Re: Sm465 clutch opinions

I went with a Centerforce dual friction on mine I have a mild 350, sm465, np205. My pedal is pretty firm, but I think that may just be the return spring I have on there. I'm happy with it so far, but i only have 250 easy miles on it and no wheeling. The little research I did on it, it got good reviews.
