Factory Style Tach Conversion

I just went through 100 or so posts trying to get straight answer on this so don't flame me for not looking.

LMC offers PN 36-1182 Tach and wiring harness PN 36-1885 and fuel gage PN 36-1962 and printed circuit PN 38-8041. With changing these parts out on my non tach dash give me a working Tach & Fuel gage?

I have one in my truck, works perfect and install was easy. The face is made of plastic but once installed you cant tell the difference.

Re: Factory Style Tach Conversion

That's a pretty good idea since nobody (including LMC) makes a tach gauge housing. Why I don't know but I imagine if they did, they wouldn't sell much of their non tach cluster parts.

Thanks J Knight for the feedback. Is it just one wire for the tach?

Re: Factory Style Tach Conversion

thats a nice aftermarket Tach! 7,000 rpm's also the intragated gas gage was available in your 4500-6500 big box style trucks i always thought that would be a good idea that you could run a clock in the small hole and have a gas gage and tach. that font though is strickly 1980-1986.. IMO they would work with the 87-91 font if you could actually hook the stock tach up in those years

I think the 2500 RPM warning band is kinda funny tho-its as if the truck ain't gonna climb at all in the upper ranges without some issues.....lol, still cool tho.

Re: Factory Style Tach Conversion

I got lucky and bought a C70 tach cluster off a guy parting one out for $40. Tach works perfect.

If you buy all these parts, you can make a working tach cluster using your housing. It does take some creative cutting but I have done something similar. You will need to cut a large square shaped hole behind the tach. In doing so do not wreck the three holes for the gas gauge. Lay your printed circuit on your housing and mark out where the holes need to be for the fuel gauge. Then use the peice you cut out for the tach and shape it and glue it in so you can pop the metal clips through for the gauge pins.

Re: Factory Style Tach Conversion

Its not too difficult to find a tach housing at a swap meet but it is difficult to find one without any broken tabs and all 78-87 tach cluster housings will interchange; 73-75 had amps instead of volts along with a mech. oil gauge and 76-77 went to volts instead of amps and kept the mech. oil gauge-1978 started the electric oil gauge. So when swap meeting for a housing for a tach, regardless of gauge face style, 78-87 will all interchange physically.

Re: Factory Style Tach Conversion

Actually, I am running a 1986 non tach printed circuit on my C70 cluster housing. It fit right on and the gauges printed circuit appears to be the same for a C10-30 tach cluster, since it has the square opening around the tach plug and the circuits for the small fuel gauge. I just had to solder 3 wires in for the small fuel gauge in the bottom of the tach. Fairly simple.

Re: Factory Style Tach Conversion

Yes, you can't mix/match light clusters with gauge clusters. I forgot about the speedo clip-its just better to find a correct cluster housing IMO. I sold all my tach clusters over a year ago except for my 80-up one so its been awhile since I've taken one apart to clean/inspect.

Re: Factory Style Tach Conversion

I did the GM Sports Salvage tach/fuel combo on my 78. The fonts don't match, but that's OK. I think legends on the 10s only makes it easier to read while driving.

I wanted the tach/fuel combo because I already have a second fuel gauge on the other side of the cluster for the other tank.
