Angry Passed the DS test today~

Thats the Dumb Sh1t test, for those of you that don't know.

I spent the better part of the last two evenings cleaning up the light sockets and the circuit board on my ’82 C30 instrument panel.
Couldn’t seem to get much light from the bulb in the upper right corner, so I pulled it (and it’s attached wire) to take a look-see. The wire seemed to be a ground wire attached to the top of the ashtray mount, so I took it in the shop for a little testing.

Absolutely NO continuity from one end of the wire to the other. Figured it was shorted, so I clipped one end off while leaving enough for a crimp connector. Nuthin’. Clipped off the other end in the same way. Nuthin’. Checked the middle piece which was left after clipping off the ends. Nuthin'.

Stripped off the end of the middle wire to see what kind of wire it is.

It’s Fibre Optic cable.

Who would have thought GM used optics to light its ashtrays in ’82.

Ben

It get's light from the upper right bulb (from the front) on the instrument cluster. It gives off just a glow so you can see the ashtray. It keeps people from stabbing their cigarettes into the $300 dash pad.

If yours is dim, don't cut both ends off like Ben did, just lightly sand each end with 400 or 600 grit paper. That takes all the dirt off of the plastic fiber and smooths it up again so it will be as bright as it can be.

Yeah, there is. It's a bulb that turns into the back of the controls. It uses the same socket as the instrument panel lights. Change the bulb.
