swapping steering column on 63 GMC
Has anyone ever swapped in a later steering column into their truck? I would like to do this since I cannot get the GMC turn signal switch. Any idea what would be the easiest to swap? I've checked into the ididit columns, but they just are not in my budget. Any help would be appreciated.

I used a 67 or 68 auto tilt column from a motorhome in mine. it works great. I have another one for $150.00 plus the ride.

i used a 72 tilt column in my 63, but it took a while to figure out the wiring. The columns in the early to late 70's vans are nearly identical to the 72 truck columns but they can be bought for a song

Thanks for your info guys! I'll keep your column in mind ironbutt, but I was hoping to find something closer to home. How much modification did you have to do to fit that.
Cochran, I have an automatic, is that what you have? Did you have to do any modification? Thanks again for your help!

mine is an automatic also, it bolted right in. the only modification i had to do was wire my 63 plug in place of the 72 plug on the harness

Turn signal switch for GMC
I checked with a couple of local parts dealers who now claim they can get me the GMC specific switch without the bearing for $140!! If they actually can get the right switch, I'll post it on the board in case anyone else is in need of one. Keeping my fingers crossed!

that sounds pretty steep. but probably cheaper than an accident or a ticket.

To heck with the local parts guys. Brothers carries the switch for $69.95 with the bearing! Mine should be here Tuesday. I can't believe I've anguished over what to do for the last year because I could not get the GMC switch. Just when I had talked myself into the column swap, the switch is available again. I still won't believe it until I can see it with my own eyes though. If anyone needs a factory switch for a 64 to 66 chevy or a 65 to 66 GMC, I have a brand new one for sale. I paid $75 for it 2 years ago. Thanks for all the help and info, even if it ended up a waste of all our time.
