help with 1959 gm water pump, or what it really is?
Ok so the pump in question came with my 1959 gmc with 270 engine. One of my questions is this Pump from Canada reason I ask that is cause I am told US pumps have two holes on the back side. So if it's from Canada how do I get a replacement I am having hard enough time with that to start I would prefer to get one with pulley attached as again I hear it can be channeling to get done ones self. Anyway just trying to figure out what I have and then what to do.
Thanks! |

Really I can't get one response on what pump I am looking for or any help on this. At this point I might as well just scrap the engine if I don't get a water pump it's of no use to me...

Re: help with 1959 gm water pump, or what it really is?
I'd suggest posting/searching over on oldgmctruck.com. There are a number of guys over there from canada and know them inside/out and what is different from US trucks. The limited knowledge I have was thinking GMC's came w/chevy motors.
edit...a quick search and all i am seeing for the 270 is a single hole in the block. They could be the same.

GMC engine was a one hole pump. Chevy 216 was a two hole pump they do not interchange.
Check with www.stovebolt.com http://www.langdonsstovebolt.com/ http://www.capitolsupply.com/gov/cat...cs7686969.html or napa http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Ca...012_0267412122 NAPA pump number is WP 598012 |

Canadian GMC trucks came with Chev engines, so a 235 I6 or a 283 V8 in a 59 GMC.

What's wrong with your pump? Just have it rebuilt.

Well when I got the pickup it was off and had been for a while... The guy I got it from had a lot of random things going on that have no rime or reason. But I finally got the screws out of the old pump and took pull off might just go through this one and use it.

Re: help with 1959 gm water pump, or what it really is?
My book shows that a water pump with the casting number 598309 came from 1937-1940 216 CID truck with 85 hp. I thought GMC used Pontiac motors.
My book only does Chevy Inline 6 Engines so can not go much further |

Re: help with 1959 gm water pump, or what it really is?
Anyone have any ideas on where I can find a gasket for backing plate also the screws that hold on the backing plate I would like to go with a different head other then slotted they gave me lots of problems removing them. Ok the last thing for now on this is the gasket used between backing plate and block. I have seen some of this stuff online at eBay but shipping is way more then the part last time I checked it doesn't take $15 for 2 stamps!
Again thanks in advance! |

May have to buy gasket material and make your own. Maybe use something like "right stuff" instead of gaskets. No suggestions on screws/bolts other then what you pulled out and using antisieze. Think about the fact that they are likely 55+ yrs old....maybe a pain but likely wnot be changed again in your lifetime.

Don't give up on that GMC engine. they have full pressure bearings are about a 1 and 1/2 inches longer than the chev 6 cyl. Forged zollinger pistons and are tougher than the chev. Lots of info about them on the HAMB. Get a piece of gasket material and make a gasket coat both sides with perma tex and you will be fine.
