Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

Well a lot has changed here lately, I bought a 2000 GMC crew cab dually.

It has a 7.4 vortec, and it is great, goes down the road really nice. Rides super smooth, I love it.

This leaves me with a bit of a conundrum: what to do with the 72, I know in its capacity as a dually, I will never use it ever. My 00 is now my dedicated tow rig and daily driver.

So what to do with the 72? Well tonight an idea struck me. Pull the Cummins out of the 72, get it cleaned up and running on an engine stand to make sure it is still good to go after the last 3 years of sitting. Then Get the parts together, install it in my 2000 GMC.

Thus giving me a tow rig with Cummins power.

Next, take the 72, cut the frame down to a short bed, Swap in a SRW rear axle, and put SRW hubs on the Dana 60. Then stuff the 454 Vortec in it with an NV4500. Problem solved.

When I was in high school I had a 70 K10 4x4 that was black, I loved the truck, my dad made me sell it because I was getting in too much trouble in it. This is probably because it had a 450 hp small block in it.

I am thinking having the Vortec 454 between the fenders of a 72 shot bed K30 wouldn't be too bad of a truck to take out and enjoy.

I think this is going to be the plan.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

kindah shame that the toolbox bed whont fit the back no more with the shorter frame
maibe it be economicly better to put a gasengine in it and trade it in for a shortbed
either that or buy a rolling short frame with bed and do a frame up from that the rear from youre longbed chassis was bobtailed too from wat i remember

i complete 2 of the trucks intoo running fashion one custom and one basicly stock the thirth will be sacrificed for parts

Nah, I will cut it down, weld it back up, only will take a few hours. I am boxing the frame anyways, It won't be a bad deal to put a short bed on it.

As of right now I don't have any bed for it, so my options are completely open.

Sounds like an awesome plan. I actually started watching your '72 build on YouTube way back when...before I had any idea you were on here. . But still, very nice idea. And I can't wait to see it.

Funny I was messing around on Google earth tonight and found my truck at my old shop on the back of my wrecker while I was moving it around.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

Well last night messing with my "new" truck trying to get things on it figured out I made a hard decision, it is getting sold and I am going to dive in hard and finish the 72. The time has come. I need to get this truck on the road and start using it for what I had intended to do.

The plan is to run to corpus in a couple of weeks and pick the truck up from where I have it stored, then get it cleaned up, I need to locate another NV4500 and a NP205 with a 32 spline input. I may go with an Atlas, we will see on that.

Either way though this truck is going to get built and put back together. I need a 4x4, I am moving back to Montana, I am going to throw down hard and get this thing done!

I don't know why, but looking back through this build I realized that I had never posted this pic once I had removed the visor.

I think it looks so much better with out it.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

Been busy, a couple of weeks ago I bought a brand new Kearney 20' all steel 7000 lb trailer so I can get down to Corpus and get the truck.

I needed a way of getting the truck loaded on the trailer so I designed a mounting plate for an old winch I have had around for a long time but never used, it is a Warn industrial 12,000 lb.

Finally tonight I got around to building the mount plate and receiver tube for the trailer. Right now I am waiting for the paint to dry, tomorrow I will have to get some pics of it installed. Here it is shown on the back of my truck. I rolled the winch line out and wound it back up proper because it was a major rats nest.

I have been wanting a setup like this since I was 15 years old, I am really glad to finally have it. I was wanting to buy a goose neck, but the issue is I am going out rig welding this summer and I am building a skid that sits in the back of my truck to hold my welding machine and tool boxes, it is going to cover up the goose neck hitch so this way with the bumper pull I will still be able to pull the trailer with the skid in the truck, which is important because I will be using it to move material.

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

that looks pretty useful , you might want to make a powerplug in under the bumper so you can use the battery thats in the truck , it would save a little in the lugging stuff along

it might actually be sumting that you could sell as a kit , i can immagine people not usually running offroad or willing to put a permanent winch on the front bumper might want to use sumting like that to pull them selves or others out of the muck
allso if you make a boom that goes over the bedlid you can either bolt intoo the bed or one you can put on the goosneck hitch and run the winchcable over that you effectivly have a removeable by a single person towtruck setup ...... ok maibe you need to change some hookup stuff ontoo the winch thing for that

Re: The Boss 72 Chevy 4x4 Cummins Dually

Well here are some pics of it in the daylight.

I loaded up my Jeep frame late last night so I could drag it over to the carwash today and get it cleaned up, it was so nice just being able to pull it right on with out fighting it or having to use a come along.

Tomorrow I have a guy coming to buy my truck hopefully, if he does I am looking at picking up a 98 I found in Dallas that is also a crew cab dually but it is black and a 4x4.

Nice looking trailer, and winches are definitely handy. Our trailer has a hand crank winch, and two electric winches. So no matter what...we have one.

Its none of my business... But did you have a build thread a few years ago on fullsizechevy about your black tow truck there?

The truck and the old brown shop look VERY familiar...
