an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
started putting my front suspension together a couple days ago and ran into a snag. i installed my 73+ drop spindle that PB sent me with my dropmember, packed and installed my wheel bearing for a 75 c10; and finished it off with my rotors for a 75 c10. once all snugged up i noticed the castle nut wasn't as threaded as it should be
checked behind the rotor to find a 1/4" or so gap jumped to the other side of the truck to test fit the parts that weren't already greased up and found a problem. the inner wheel bearing's ID is off, notice the daylight between bearing and spindle. the bearing's OD is perfect. fits great into rotor when rotor is installed without inner bearing, only outer, it fits perfect. i searched and found a thread about big and small bearing and heavy duty rotors but didn't solve my problem. FYI rotor is 1.25" thick so not only do i need an inner bearing with a smaller ID but it needs to be skinnier so that the rotor will sit further down the spindle. Is the "big" or "small" inner bearing the answer to my problems |

Oh yeah, the quicker i can get this worked out, the quicker i can roll it out of the garage and get a good look at it with the cab on. It's never had a cab on it!

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
Check w/Nate & verify the spindles are indeed for 1.25" brakes. Or, if it's faster for you, hit your local parts house & get inner bearings for an 81-87 w/the 1.00" rotors. See if they fit the spindle shaft.

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
thanks for the idea. i just made a quick run to kragen and they did, indeed, have the small bearing for 81+ light duty rotors in stock. light duty bearing was model A-6; heavy duty was model A-5, which is the big one that i already have. Just from the eye test i performed in the store, it seems that A-6 has the correct ID (and is skinnier) and would fit the spindle but to small of a OD and would not fit the rotor. so it seems that the spindle i received will only work with a light duty rotor. so much for it being 73+, more like 81-87 with light duty rotor

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
On all our C10 spindles the inner bearing is 1-3/8" part number LM48548 it looks like the axle might be 1-1/4". Cars uses an 1-1/4 bearing and the axle is abbout 1/8" (3 threads) shorter.

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
They all have to match.
Spindle, rotor and bearings, and calipers. Like you said,... sounds like the wrong spindle. The '75 stuff should be the 1.25" wide rotors. What brand spindle and what is the part number? It should be easy to figure out which spindle you have.

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
I only recommend, and sell the 73-87 HD (1.25" rotor) spindles with my kits... unless the customer specifies that they want the LD rotor. If you received the LD spindle there was a mistake, and the incorrect spindle was shipped. I will give you a call tomorrow and see what we need to do to gat you taken care of!

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
finally had the time to check the spindle today, it says behing the rotor: "mcgaughy's classic drop 6072r". the spindle's O.D. where the inner bearing should sit is 1.25" (I.D. of bearing 1 3/8"). spindle snout is 4" long

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
I know this is an old post, but I am having the exact same problem right now. I am really trying to figure out how this issue was solved or what you ended up doing? I have Mcnaughty drop spindles with CPP 6 lug rotors. It just seems like the wheel bearing just aren't seating correctly so when I try to put the spindle nut on, it doesn't go on far enough to allow me put the cotter pin in. Its a few cm's off. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
You need to verify what rotor your spindle was made for. I would start a new thread and post the part numbers you have and we should be able to get it worked out. From the sounds of it it does seem like you have spindles for 1" rotors and the 1.25 rotors.

Re: an issue with my spindle/rotor/bearing combo
6-lug aftermarket rotors are ALL the 1.25" wide version.
You just have to match it with the same version. (1.25" wide spindle, bearings and caliper, must all match.
