You have a vacuum leak. Some say to use an unlit propane torch, allow the gas to flow and the motor should rev when your near the source of the leak. Is the carb sufficiently secured?

i did the same thing to my truck used a 1985 250 with a early head i did well for a long time drove it every day for 4 years
