Howdy!

Hey all,

Oregoon here. I posted a lot back in 2009, when I was working on my '66 Suburban. Then, as luck had it, I needed cash in a hurry for a downpayment on a house, and my wife refused to live in the Suburban, so we sold it and I got involved with a Brand-X truck for a while before it gave up on me...

Flash-forward to today, when I bought an extremely clean GMC 1/2 ton longbed with 90K original miles, a 250-cid and a three-on-the-tree. It runs beautifully and it's in great shape. I love inliners, and I'm partial to the '73-'87 body style, so this truck was a no-brainer.

Plans involve desmogging the 250, repairing a few tiny rust spots, and driving the old girl around as much as I can.

Please accept my advance apologies for any dumb questions. Though I have experience with a great deal of project vehicles, I still prefer a to look like a fool rather than make a fool's mistakes...

Despite linking stuff to photobucket, I can't seem to get a picture to upload. Any tips? I checked out the FAQ, and I'm stumped.

Until then: It's Killarney Green with a saddle interior, white bumpers, and aside from a few minor dings, in great shape. Nice rusty/dusty patina on the hubcaps, and it has bias-plys with a 1980 date code. Interior is virtually flawless. And the motor runs well.

I'll probably throw a carb-kit at it after I desmog. Otherwise, maybe a header and an HEI? I'm into it being a nice old work-truck, so economy, drivability and right-lane rolling are the watch-words for this project.

No hotrodding, no lowering, nothing but enjoying a nice old truck.

Down the road... Who knows?

On photobucket, copy the "IMG" code for the pic. Then paste it into your reply.

Re: Howdy!

Welcome back buddy! I think I remember your suburban. It was white, right? I think we may have met one year at Rose City Round-Up when I still had my teal '60 GMC.

Re: Howdy!

Hey Cort,

I remember that Teal truck! She was a beauty, for sure. And yep, my 'burb was white and rusty. I sold it to a guy from Salem and then several years later, I saw it on a trailer heading east on I-84. No idea where it went. Wouldn't be surprised if it turns up on this site again.

Speaking of '60-'66 trucks, I thought of you and Teal rig yesterday. I bought my '74 in Astoria, though it spent most of its life in Tacoma. As I remembered it, Astoria is your old stomping grounds, right?

Interior is really clean, too. Not bad for $1900.

Re: Howdy!

That, my friend, is a steal! I'm glad to see that someone is leaving a base-model all stock, including the straight-6!

Re: Howdy!

Aside from desmogging it, and finding a seat-cover (mostly to protect the original vynil), it's going to be driven and maintained.

I might put a lumber-rack on it, if I can find one that looks right.

Re: Howdy!

I missed this place! I must say the guys over at Slick '60s (they dig Brand-X trucks) are a bunch of good guys, too. Every bit as cool and helpful as the people on this site. Then again, anyone with an affinity for old trucks is okay in my book.

Furthermore, after owning a '66 F100 for a while, I'd have to say the Detroit/Dearborn debate is moot. Both marquees make excellent products and both have their quirks.

That said, I'm in love with my new GMC, and glad to see the end of my old Ford. After two 240 engines, several carbs and an total ignition system overhaul (Motorcraft stuff is awful: I used a GM single wire and four-pin HEI), it ran great for a week. Then a wrist pin let go...

While I realize that could happen to any old engine, my luck with GM inliners has been much better.
