Mainly, a distributor needs to be in good condition. A 200,000 miler with weights and springs that are either froze up or flopping in the breeze and a shot out vacum advance is garbage. Sounds obvious but I've seen too many of those still in service. Anyone who replaces a garbage distributor with something new should notice a difference. The advance curve is the minder of the motor.
