Wiper Blades / Inserts

Seems as if I can't get much more than 6-8 months out of a pair of rubber wipers before they start to squeak and chatter. They clean the window fine when raining but the squeak and chatter drives me nuts. Last pair I bought was in April, Anco brand wiper inserts. Did not replace the blades themselves, just the rubber inserts. This is on a '99 Tahoe, just seems to me I use to be able to get 18 months to two years or more before needing to change inserts. Anyone else always having to change rubber inserts so often or am I buying just poor replacements? As mentioned these are ANCO inserts which I have used for years.

Re: Wiper Blades / Inserts

I don't expect more than 6 months out of a wiper blade. In the summer it bakes in the sun, and in the winder they get beat up with ice. I think that's a lot to ask for a piece of rubber. Especially for how much they cost.

I use rainx or anco, and I get the basic ones with the metal frames

Re: Wiper Blades / Inserts

6 months may be the norm in todays world but I sure don't recall my Dad changing the rubber wiper inserts this often. I got my license when I was 16 and my first car when I came back from Viet Nam in 1970. I clearly recall changing wipers at about 18 months to 2 year intervals at that time. Then my cars set outside all thru summer and winter. The Tahoe sits in the garage all night and during the day unless the wife is working or we are going somewhere. I really think they have changed the composition of the rubber over the years but that's just my opinion and their a dime a dozen or used to be .

Like everything else nowadays, cheaply made and more expensive. Heck the newer vehicles take those "neoform" style blades at 25 bucks a piece. I have some customers asking me to replace them almost every oil change.

I AGREE! It's a pet peeve of mine too. I have been around long enough to know they lasted a lot longer than than they do now.

Unfortunately this is the trend on most everything!

One consolation is I read somewhere that the oil companies are refining the oils much better and that that means that the by products that are used in rubber isn't as good. That is why rubber products aren't lasting. Not sure if it is true but it does make sense.

I have been buying better (read most expensive) wipers with better results but not great.
