carb choice for 454

Hey guys, just want some input on the carb choice for my 76 chev c20 with a 454. Its almost stock except the comp cam 470/into and 475 exh. Headers and alum intake. I picked up a new hei dis to replace the old one. Its got a 600 Holley street avenger but I think its to small. Every once in a while it pings a bit when I wanna give it some get up and go. I'm not gonna lie I'm a lil partial to Holley haha but any advice is welcome

Re: carb choice for 454

I will have to mention that the carb for your set up sounds about right, would not go over a 650cfm for a basic stock motor of that size. If you think its in the carb then look into swamping jet size. But first check the basic tune up items. 2nd check timing. 3rd check for bad vacuum lines and leaks. Hope this helps find your ping.

Re: carb choice for 454

Thanks Craig, although I had a duh moment haha, its actually a 670. The timing is good. Plugs and wires are good, I'm thinking it could be an ing problem hence the new dizzy, which I got a good deal on just a good new he I one so I'll try that. I gotta say I love the big block. And the ping is very subtle and not even all the time. I just wanna get her perfect cuz 1 she deserves it and 2 I need it to be reliable as my wife uses her too lol. Anyways thanks!

Dizzy is it a brass one or the cheaper alum.
possible a bad batch of fuel, bit of water in the system

Re: carb choice for 454

At first I thought it was fuel. The plugs looks not bad. And I've pounded a few tanks of 94 octane through. Its just the stock hei dist in there right now

Re: carb choice for 454

I would do a quick check to make sure not loosing spark through the cap, another option is a weak spark from the coil.
There are many things to check, throwing a bunch out there to help.
I have had ping 3 time in my life, 1st time it was a bad coil, hair line crack in it.
2nd it was a sloppy timing chain from many hard miles, 3rd was distributor magnetic pickup was shorting out due to bad ground on the engine to frame bolt.

Re: carb choice for 454

As far as your carb question goes, I did some research when looking for a carb to put on the TBI 454 motor that went in my truck. I went with the edelbrock 1411 750 cfm because it has slightly smaller primaries than the 1407 model for stock/mild engines and has an electric choke. My engine has headers only and seems to run pretty damn good. Its amazing how much it puts you back in the seat when I roll into the secondaries too.
