Opinions on Float type Brass or Nitrophyl

I will be buying a new float with my carb kit, and i have the option of buying either the brass or nitrophyl float. There is no difference in price between the two.

Which is better?

Thanks, Ryan

The one that floats.

Personally, I have no preference. Actually, I don't think I've used a brass float since the '80's.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Re: Opinions on Float type Brass or Nitrophyl

This is one of those age old discussions which can go either way. I used to strictly use the Nitrophyl floats but now with the added ethanol, alcohol, etc I have gone with brass. Most kits come with updated rubber seals for the accel pump, and a viton tip for the needle and seat that are made to withstand today's additives. Never had a problem with the Nitro floats but thought what the heck, lets see how the brass does with today's fuel. Some say the brass will corrode with the additives, some say the nitro will swell. Got less than a month and 100 mi on the carb overhaul so way to early to tell...

go with the brass float . Over time the plastic ones become saturated and start to sink giving a richer mixture.

Re: Opinions on Float type Brass or Nitrophyl

I think ethanol eats brass. Our dirt bikes set up for a while without being ridden, and I thought they had stabil in the fuel. The carbs were nasty to say the least, but on my bike, the reserve feed tube on the petcock was eaten in half at the fuel level line. Maybe the tube wasn't actual brass, but it appeared to be.

Stay away from brass if you use ethanol blended fuel. If you don't know if you do use blended fuel, then YOU DO! You have to try hard to avoid it anymore, especially this time of year.
