Question 1959 Short Fleetside bed plank dimensions

Thinking about having friend of mine who is a woodworking guy come up with something for my 59 Fleetside bed instead of buying one of the kits that are available. Has anyone seen any specs/dimensions on what size ect each plank should be?

When you make them, cut perpendicular notches from the grooves the rails sit in to the sides about every 12 inches. Without them any moisture has to run all the way to the front and back sills to drain, or sits and rots the wood.

and... since your not restoring the truck you can make them any width or material
truk has trex plastic decking from homedepot, they are all the same width and no finishing or protection required

stock bed strips were painted black and raised above the bed wood to protect the wood from a shovel
if you paint your bed strips and don't want the paint beat off them, lower the strips a bit

You forgot to mention you have to re-drill the cross sills....

Re: 1959 Short Fleetside bed plank dimensions

For my old shop truck, I just bought a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" treated plywood. Measured the distance between the bolt holes in the cross sills and ripped the plywood accordingly. After all the cuts were made and the holes drilled for the bed sides and mounting bolts, I coated the pieces with Thompson's water seal. I didn't even bother to route the grooves for the rails, just bolted them on top.
Figured I didn't want to spend big bucks for something I was going to use to haul engines, tranny's and firewood. Sure enough, the first time I put a motor in the back of the truck, it fell over and dumped about a quart of old, nasty oil on the bed.
Aside from the new rails and bolts, I've got about $50 in my bed. Still got about 1/2 gallon of Thompson's, so the next replacement will be about $38.

Great idea! I might look into that for my fleetside bed.

1958-1966 Truck Fleetside Tailgate, Ultimate hinge Trunnion (2 Piece Set) made of Stainless Steel and Delrin.
These are replacement hinge trunnion parts to upgrade your chevy fleetside truck.
These are perfect for the truck restorer!

These are Very quite while opening and closing the tailgate.
You have to reused your original Trunnion hinge plate/bracket as seen in the pictures. Just remove the bolt with lock washer, replace with these stainless steel hinge trunnions and bolt back on your truck.

I recommend power coating or chrome your Trunnion hinge plate before installing these back on it. To prevent further rusting.
