drop spring identity

So when I bought my 64 c10 it came with an extra set of front and back coil springs. I was told they were lowering springs. Is there anyway if measuring the springs to see if this is true. If they are lowering and how low I will get? I don't want to put them on and find out they are stock. Any ideas?

Re: drop spring identity

Pictures will help. Also a lot of the drop coils have numbers on them.

Re: drop spring identity

I'm pretty certain you have stock springs.

When I built one of my trucks a few years ago I snapped these pictures. These are both front springs

The blue spring is 3 inch drop. The silver vein colored spring is 2 inch drop. The blue springs had been run about 1000 miles and taken their set, the silver springs were brand new. After running them a few weeks they took a set and measured exactly 1 inch longer than the 3 inch springs did.

You can trust those numbers as reliable. I personally bought both sets of springs myself brand new.

Re: drop spring identity

Very much so. I don't have pictures of lowered rear springs with a tape measure, but a six inch drop spring isn't much taller than your hand from tip of finger to end of palm. Those springs you have there are skyscraper tall in comparison.

Re: drop spring identity

Well that sucks. I was hoping I had some drop springs. My truck needs to be dropped something fierce.

Re: drop spring identity

So I'm thinking I'm going to try sponge jeep springs in the back and cut 1.5 coils of me extra set and see what happens. I've found some xj springs for $ 20 on cl. I know it kills your ability to haul stuff. But I don't have a bed in it now anyway so why not? Any thoughts?

Re: drop spring identity

If youre not hauling anything why not?
Just be sure and seat your front springs correctly. Notice how they sit in the control arms before you remove them

Re: drop spring identity

Those rear coils look way too thin to be truck coils. Have you measured the thickness? Compare to what's on the truck rear already. Those rubber isolators on the rear coils are not from our trucks.

Re: drop spring identity

Does not look like truck springs for the front ones either. They do not have the correct wrap for the register in the cross member.

Re: drop spring identity

On the front springs I would say no on working. They look to be not big enough around and if you look at Keven's pictures of the truck springs you will see that one end is wound smaller. That is to go around an alignment spigot in the top of the cross member. If the spring is allowed to move around it can hang up on the edge of the pocket in the cross member.

Re: drop spring identity

I see what you are saying about not having the pigtail on the top. So then if I cut my stock springs I would cut them from the bottom leaving the pigtail at the top?

Re: drop spring identity

Yes cut them from the bottom. I would do a half wrap at a time. Easy to make them shorter not so easy if you go to far.
